Class of 2023 Senior Portrait Update
Seniors, there will be one more round of portrait appointments on campus in
mid-October. If you have yet to take your portraits with Prestige, you
should expect to receive an email reminder in early October. You must take
a portrait with Prestige by Thanksgiving Break if you want to have that
photo in the yearbook. After this next round of appointments you should
expect to travel to Prestige’s Hayward office if needed.
Prestige Portraits will send out appointment information by email and mail
14 days prior to the appointment. Also, students will get appointment
information 7 days, 3 days, and 24 hours prior to the appointment. If you
would like to cancel or change the appointment time they can call
877-825-7922 or email us at byarea at lifetouch.com. Please let Prestige know
if you have any questions.

Free & Reduced Meals Verification
Families should complete an EZ Meal App <http://secure.ezmealapp.com/> in
order to receive benefits under the free & reduced lunch program. If
determined to qualify, students can receive discounts to school events
(prom, graduation, etc.) among other testing discounts if they have
completed forms on file with B.U.S.D. Once determined to qualify for free &
reduced meals, Nutrition Services will send a paper copy of the eligibility
letter to the home mailing address. To receive the discount, this paper
copy or digital photo of the eligibility letter will be shown to school
officials overseeing the school event. Families can also request an
eligibility letter if they completed the Alternative Income Form at
registration.
If a household needs another letter they should contact Sara Leon either
through saraleon at berkeley.net or nutritionservices at berkeley.net. This
information is protected by right to privacy so we are not able to provide
this information to minors or someone other than the head of household.

Berkeley High School is investigating the way we use instructional time
through a Bell Schedule Redesign Process which will culminate in a
recommendation for a potential redesigned bell schedule. This work is led

A Message about Attendance
In an effort to create a responsive consequence to hold students to high
expectations for attendance, we have a new version of Detention called
“Attendance Intervention Program” which basically means that students on
the “Detention” list are required to attend tutorial sessions to clear
their unexcused absences. There is a menu of options to meet your needs -
choose one or many.
How do I know if I have detention?
Look at your Infinite Campus attendance record and ask yourself:
1.
Do you have 3 or more unexcused absences?
2.
Do you have a LAT on your record?
3.
Do you have a CUT on your record?
4.
Do you have more than 20 tardies?
If so, you are assigned to Detention, now known as AIP.
What do you need to do?
Attend a tutorial session from one of the choices here or set up your own
session. Once you attend, they will email attendanceoffice at berkeley.net and
you will see the code MAK on your record - which means you have completed
your end of the deal.

The Period Education Club
The Period Education Club, ran by Edith and Elodie. The first meeting is
this Thursday (9/15/22) in room H103 and there will be pizza for
participants! The Period Education Club is welcome to all (people with and
without periods). The meetings will include open discussions about periods
and the education around them, as well as how we can make resources and
products more accessible at BHS and in the Berkeley community. At the end
of the year we will create a slideshow about periods (anatomy, gender,
resources, etc) and go around to Berkeley schools teaching grades 4-8 about
periods to end stigma around them.

Student BHS Athletics Season Passes are on sale again this Thursday at
lunch in front of the Donahue. For $30, you get unlimited access to home
ticketed sports events (volleyball, water polo, football, soccer,
basketball, lacrosse). We accept cash, credit, and debit. [note: there is a
fee for CC/Debit cards].
Here are this week’s home games.
We have Water Polo home opener vs. O'Dowd Tuesday (Boys JV at 4, Boys Var
at 4:45, Girls Varsity at 5:45, Girls JV at 6:30)

One million high school students will be old enough to vote in November if

2022 PSAT
Berkeley High School will be offering the 2022 PSAT to our Junior students
on Saturday, Oct, 15, The start time will be 8 am.
Registration is online at user.TotalRegistration.net/PSAT/050290
<https://user.totalregistration.net/PSAT/50290>. Registration will open on
September 19 at 8 am and will close September 30 at 11 pm.
The cost per exam is $30. Families who have qualified for the free and
reduced lunch programs may send a snapshot of their letter of acceptance
received from the district to benettewilliams at berkeley.net. Once the
confirmation of participation is received, the discounted fee of $8.00 will
be approved.
Families can pay online with a credit or debit card. It is also possible to
send a check by mail to Total Registration. The process is explained in the
online registration. All registrations must be paid in full by Oct. 3 or
the exam will be canceled.
350 exams have been ordered. Should we reach that number before
registration closes, a wait list will be established. If students cancel
their exam or the test is not paid for by Oct. 3, students on the waitlist
will be moved onto the roster. Sophomores may not take the PSAT at Berkeley
High. Only Junior scores qualify for the National Merit Scholarship
program.,

The Alameda County Registrar of Voters (ROV) is preparing to appoint
Student Election Workers to serve in the Tuesday, November 8, 2022, General
Election
We truly appreciate your leadership in promoting participation on your
campus. ROV encourages Student Election Workers that are available all 4
days will have a better chance of being appointed.

We are following mandates from County and State COVID-19 requirements.
Personal Protective Equipment will be provided during training and voting

Students can earn between $495 - $520 and bilingual election workers can
earn an extra $25 for the highest amount. If you have friends or family
that are looking to earn extra money and community service experience,
please pass on this high school application to them.
If you are no longer a student in high school, you are still strongly
encouraged to participate as your experience and tech-savviness will help
as we introduce our new electronic voting system to our voters.
The Student Poll Worker Program is truly a “Civics in Action” exercise.
High school students must meet the following criteria to participate:

Have a GPA of 2.5 or greater

Have permission from a parent/guardian and a school administrator

Approval is not needed for weekend hours from school

Coastal Cleanup Day
On September 17th join City staff, community groups, and volunteers from
around Berkeley to help clean up trash and plastic pollution at local
beaches, bays, and waterways during Coastal Cleanup Day.
Cleanup activities will take place from 9am-12pm, along various areas of
the Berkeley Waterfront and Aquatic Park.
You can pre-register online as an individual or group

participants must fill out a waiver; youth under 18 must have a waiver
completed by their legal guardian.
To reduce plastic waste, if you are able, please bring your own supplies:
- a bucket or reusable bag

- a filled, reusable water bottle
Otherwise, buckets, bags, and gloves will be available for volunteers.

Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a
hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits
discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based
on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender,
gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation
status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin
(including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license
(issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or
mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder,
HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple
sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic
characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered
domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political
belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a
person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived
characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local
law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to
which it provides significant assistance.
Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic
in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a
legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the
individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services,
activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse
employment action.
Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to
unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both
subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable
person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so
severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability
to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services,
activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take
many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling,
graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or
humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a
form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District
and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or
employee.
Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying,
intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected
characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to
intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed
notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees,
students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps
to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps
reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment,
if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These
steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint
or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from
retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who
files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance,
discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates
in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory
policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance
within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified
School District.
