News from the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG)

May 2022

Our annual SPRING CHALLENGE MATCH CAMPAIGN kicked off yesterday! All
donations to BHSDG made before May 29th will be DOUBLED. Our goal is to
raise $40,000 and your gift at any level gets us closer to that goal.

Donate online <https://www.bhsdg.com/donate> or mail checks to BHSDG, P.O.
Box 519, Berkeley, CA 94701.

BHSDG funds essential programs, materials, and training at BHS, B-Tech, and
Berkeley Independent Studies. Some of this year’s grant highlights include:

    • Free after-school tutoring staffed by classroom teachers

    • Equity-focused teacher professional development

    • Financial assistance with college application, testing fees, and
First Step Awards to ease the transition to college

    • Community-building events such as the Spring Carnival, A’s game
field trips, and prom tickets

    • Club support for Mock Trial, Robotics, Financial Empowerment, and
Power Through Voices

    • Asian-American Pacific Islander history curriculum development

    • Chromebooks for the Multilingual Program

Now is your chance to double your impact! Every donation makes a
difference. Please take a moment right now to send in a check or donate
online <https://www.bhsdg.com/donate>.

Read on for May grant highlights and to find out more about the essential
programs that your donations to BHSDG have funded this month, as well as
the many ways you can get involved and invest in strengthening our school.

WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?

Your contributions to BHSDG fund after-school tutoring, classroom supplies,
software, teacher professional development, technology, college-application
support, and many other programs. Without your donations, the BHS
experience would simply not be the same. Highlights of grants funded at our
May meeting include:

Multilingual Program Graduation and End of the Year Celebrations ($1,164).
BHSDG funds will support special end of the school year and graduation
celebrations for students in the Multilingual Program--many of whom are new
arrivals to the United States and to Berkeley. The event will feature
student performances and speeches, awards, a tribute to graduating seniors
and exiting students from different grade levels, and a dance party hosted
by BHS Director of Student Activities John Villavicencio.

B-Tech Guest Speakers ($1,000). Supports career-focused guest speaker
presentations for students in the Public Health Pathway at Berkeley
Technology Academy (B-Tech) to help them prepare for life after graduation.

TherActivist Books, Film Screening, and Author Talk ($750). This grant will
provide students enrolled in the Black Psychology, Sociology, and
Anthropology course in the African-American Studies department copies
of TherActivist:
They/Them/Theirs, by Berkeley High graduate and social justice advocate
Dana TherActivist Johnson, plus a film screening and a visit by the author.
Both the book and film shine a light on the intersectionality of identity,
inclusion, gender expression and social justice activism and fits well with
multiple units that the course has covered this year.

Teacher Professional Development Supplement to Fulbright award ($1,250).
BHSDG funds will support expenses for African-American Studies Department
co-chair Dawn Williams to travel to South Africa in connection with a
Department of Education Fulbright award. During her visit Ms. WIlliams will
attend lectures and meet with faculty, community organizers, artists, and
others. This project, officially announced in 2019 but delayed due to the
pandemic, was created to help teachers develop curriculum for classroom
instruction and enhance the teaching of global studies.

Video Production Class Sketchbooks ($850). This grant will provide all
students in IB Film and Advanced Studio Editing classes with sketchbooks.
These will be used as filmmaker notebooks for production brainstorming,
planning and design over the course of the year. Students will use these
daily as part of the production process.

Class of 2022 Yard Signs ($4,530). Your generosity means that all of this
year's graduating seniors will receive a yard sign celebrating their
achievement. This practice began in 2020 when the pandemic made in-person
graduation impossible, and with your support we can make it a new Berkeley
High tradition!
