News from the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG)

April 2022

A huge thanks to all of those who joined us for a special event last month
with bestselling author Peggy Orenstein and consultant, health educator,
and author Shafia Zaloom!

Thanks to community members like you and sponsors *North Berkeley Wealth
Management*, *Bebe McRae and Alexis Thompson*, *Ira and Carol Serkes*, and
*Gather* restaurant, we raised more than $20,000 to support vital programs
and activities at Berkeley High School, Berkeley Independent Studies
(9-12), and Berkeley Technology Academy.

Read on for April grant highlights and to find out more about the essential
programs that your donations to BHSDG have funded this month, as well as
the many ways you can get involved and invest in strengthening our school.

WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?

Your contributions to BHSDG fund after-school tutoring, classroom supplies,
software, teacher professional development, technology, college-application
support, and many other programs. Without your donations, the BHS
experience would simply not be the same. Highlights of grants funded at our
April meeting include:

Spanish Readers for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes ($345). BHSDG funds
will purchase packages of fiction and non-fiction books in Spanish to
create a classroom library for students. Books will be selected to appeal
to students' interest and to offer engaging reading and language building
opportunities beyond the standard course textbooks. Titles will feature a
range of student-centered topics and levels.

Training for Explorations in Data Science ($3750). As part of a planned new
4-year math pathway at Berkeley High School that will include a Data
Science course, this grant will allow three teachers to attend a multi-day
training at Stanford University. This new course will introduce students to
the main concepts in data science, including data analysis, sampling,
correlation/causation, bias and uncertainty, probability, modeling with
data, making and evaluating data-based arguments, the power of data in
society, and more; and plans are to add the Data Science course beginning
in the 2022-23 school year.

Universal 9th Grade Field Trip to Oakland A's game ($5,000). This grant
will pay 50% of the ticket price for the entire 9th grade class--800
students--and 100 adults to attend an Oakland A's game. In spring of 2019,
the U9 started a tradition that they hoped would be an annual one--an all
9th grade trip to an A's game. The pandemic disrupted this tradition, and
BHSDG funding now will allow every 9th grader to to join an experience that
supports the U9 goal of building community and bringing joy to the school
environment.

Gender Awareness Training for Berkeley Technology Academy ($1,500). BHSDG
funding will pay for a consultant to develop a curriculum and offer teacher
training at BTA in order to support LGBTQ students. The same training was
previously offered to Berkeley High teachers and will allow BTA teachers
and staff to identify culturally competent best practices for creating an
LGBTQ-affirming school.

AP and IB Testing Fee Support ($1,500). This grant will increase the
previously agreed-upon funding to pay AP and IB test fees for students in
need to $8500 total. The original funding came from a board-initiated grant
inspired by a student idea to make the AP and IB tests more accessible to
all Berkeley High students. These funds provided assistance for 104 AP
tests and 81 IB tests.

AC Senior End of Year Celebration ($5,500). BHSDG funding will allow all AC
seniors--almost 400 students--to take part in a senior class field trip to
celebrate the end of the year and graduation. Students will attend an
Oakland A's game and will be honored with a senior breakfast later in May.
