Read on for March grant highlights and to find out more about the essential programs that your donations to BHSDG have funded this month, as well as the many ways you can get involved and invest in strengthening our school.

WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?

Your contributions to BHSDG fund after-school tutoring, classroom supplies, software, teacher professional development, technology, college-application support, and many other programs. Without your donations, the BHS experience would simply not be the same. Highlights of grants funded at our March meeting include:

Visual and Performing Arts department sweatshirt design project ($800). This grant provides funding for 20 teachers in the visual and performing arts to create and print custom sweatshirts. This project will give teachers a hands-on professional development and team-building experience. It will also facilitate collaboration among participating teachers and encourage application of "design thinking."

Financial Empowerment Club ($300). BHSDG funds will pay operating costs for the new Financial Empowerment Club, which was founded to prepare BHS seniors to be financially literate in time for graduation. Unlike many other high schools, Berkeley High does not require completion of a financial literacy course to graduate, and this club aims to give seniors the preparation and resources to succeed after graduation. Grant funds will pay for materials and supplies.

CH3: Health, Healing and Happiness Capoeira ($150). This grant will provide funding for a Capoeira instructor for special education students. The Capoeira class will allow students to learn Afro-Brazilian history through songs, instrument playing, and movement. It will also give students the opportunity to practice social skills and benefit from hands-on learning.
