The BHS 504 paradigm is evolving. As of this year BHS has a new 504 Administrator, Melissa Virrueta. This staff position should bring more clarity and consistency to how 504 accommodations are written and upheld.

504s were discussed in two successive PTSA meetings in the Spring of 2021. In the absence of BHS currently having any 504 student case managers or staff members responsible for 504 student advocacy, the consensus of meeting participants was to form a subcommittee to provide advocacy for 504 students and support for their families. How this will manifest is yet to be determined.

The first meeting is on Monday, Nov 15 from 7 to 8:30pm on Zoom, here is the link

Passcode: 411493

The meeting topic is "Issues around Retest Accommodations." Why retests? Because .....
Retests are taken for granted in middle schools, particularly in math classes; consequently retests are often omitted as a 504 accommodation when having them has been critical to a 504 student's success prior to BHS.
Retests are among classroom policies that BHS teachers choose for their classes. Some teachers allow retests, some do not.
Prior to 2021-22, BHS academic counselors identified and distributed 504 students' accommodations. Most, if not all, omitted retests because their 504 training was insufficient and/or to sidetrack the problem that not all BHS teachers allow retests.
BHS has an administrative policy that prohibits changing teachers so it's not possible for a 504 student to change from a teacher who doesn't allow retests to one who does.
Retests (and test correction) touch on the full gamut of 504 related issues at BHS; understanding them is a good starting place.

FYI providing parent education meeting on 504s is not the purpose of this meeting. This meeting is for parents who are interested in finding ways to establish advocacy for BHS 504 students and provide resources for their families. Progress towards these goals will be shared on the PTSA website and a future PTSA parent education meeting in 2022.
