Dear Parent/Guardian,
I am writing to inform you that we were notified of several positive COVID-19 test results for individuals who were at Berkeley High School during their infectious period. While we have no reason to believe your student was a close contact* of these individuals, we are notifying you because we have committed to notifying the community any time there is a positive case at a BUSD site.

Because there were at least 3 COVID-19 cases occurring in a 14-day period that were epidemiologically linked, the City of Berkeley Public Health Department has determined this to be an outbreak and has instructed the district to mandate additional COVID-19 testing for some individuals. We continue to work closely with the City of Berkeley Public Health Department to monitor this situation as we follow all positive case protocols.
There is nothing you need to do at this time. We take the health and safety of our staff and students very seriously. We hope you take reassurance in the fact that we do not believe that your student was a close contact to this individual. Please continue to have your student practice all COVID-19 safety protocols.
Regards,
Amanda Frey
District Nurse
*A close contact is defined as a person who is less than 6 feet from an infected person for greater than 15 minutes. This can be with or without a face covering/mask. The 15 minutes do NOT have to be contiguous, that is, for example, a person could have 10 minutes of contact before lunch and five minutes of contact after lunch for a total of 15 minutes.
*If your student was a close contact of this positive individual you would have already received a separate phone call/email notification indicating this.

Estimado Padre/Tutor Legal:

We continue to work closely with the City of Berkeley Public Health Department to monitor this situation as we follow all positive case protocols.
