BHS Athletics Update
Here is this week’s Yellow Jacket sports action…
Girls Field Hockey squared up yesterday against the Archie Williams Falcons, school formerly known as Sir Francis Drake High School.
Girls Tennis had home matches yesterday at San Pablo Park versus the Arroyo Dons.
Girls Golf played a road match yesterday at Redwood Canyon.
Girls Volleyball play on the road at the Bishop O’Dowd Dragons today after their home games yesterday vs. Castro Valley. 
The Boys & Girls Water Polo teams also play the Castro Valley Trojans today in the BHS Natatorium.
The Girls Water Polo teams will travel to an all-day tournament in Granite Bay this Friday.
And on Friday night, the Football & the BHS Cheer Squad will swarm all over the Encinal Jets after last week’s victory versus Kennedy.

Join 9th Grade Leadership
Hey Class of 2025, Rep your hive! Even if you have not thought of yourself as a leader, you should consider adding your name to the 9th Grade Leadership Lottery. Instead of an election or interview, ASB Leadership will be conducting a lottery to select one representative from each Hive and an additional five students from any hive. 
Over the course of 10-12 weeks as a team, you will work on a team fundraiser, decide on an activity where you will spend those funds, and collaborate on a 9th grade community campaign. We hope that many of you in the Class of 2025 will enter into this Leadership Lottery starting today up until the deadline of October 8th. The team will be selected on lucky October 13th.

Charting Your Path to Adulthood
 
The Future is Nova is thrilled to present our 3-part Fall Series for female-identifying and non-binary high schoolers. For these events, we'll be making stops at choosing your unique life path, living on your own, and innovating in your chosen field. The Future is Nova, a UC Berkeley student-founded organization that envisions a professional world where young female-indentifying and non-binary individuals are empowered to disrupt, create, and innovate in any space. Physics Club Lecture on October 8th
The Berkeley High School Physics Club is back with their second event of the year! On October 8th, Dmitry Budker, will speak to us about the symmetries of the universe - or more specifically, how they are broken and what that means for the universe! Here is more information:

What: Breaking the Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe

Fundamental symmetries play a key role in physics. Interestingly, many of them are broken, with the most famous example being violation of spatial inversion symmetry (parity). We will discuss how fundamental symmetries are studied in the laboratory, for example, in table-top atomic and molecular physics experiments.

Would you like to change the world? Get nominated for The Changemaker Project!
 
The Changemaker Project is a social justice leadership course, mentoring program, and design challenge for teens. TCP is looking for nominations of students with a passion for leadership and activism. 
 
In the program, students from around the world join a live course each Wednesday @ 4pm (beginning Oct. 6th) to learn about social and climate justice issues, develop unique social impact projects, and build community with other activists from around the globe. You can win funding for your projects at Global Pitch, and receive mentorship throughout the year as you build and launch your projects.
 
Berkeley High has been participating in The Changemaker Project for the last four years, and our teams have won funding every year.
 
In order to participate, you must be nominated by a BHS staff member or TCP alum by Oct. 1st. If you're interested in joining, ask a teacher to nominate you by giving your name to Matt Albinson (mattalbinson at berkeley.net <mailto:mattalbinson at berkeley.net>) by this Friday, Oct. 1st.

BHS Jacket still accepting Latinx Chicanx Heritage Month Submissions

September 15 - October 15 is Latinx Chicanx Heritage Month. The Jacket is taking submissions for writing and art pieces representing what this month means for BHS students. Any student can submit a piece of work to the Jacket to be featured in our celebratory issue.  9th Grade Leadership for Life Academy 9th with the Young Adult Project 
The Young Adult Project (YAP) is happy to return back to BHS with our Leadership for Life Academy program!!! Our program is to assist 9th graders and find various ways to help students transition from middle school to high school. The staff will give participants the necessary skills to better manage their school lives; as well as give them the tools needed to enhance and balance their social lives. Students will address topics about time management and communication. But they will also explore different study methods to find which works best for them. Overall the goal is to give these students a learning advantage where they can grow in an environment and to give them that extra support to be successful.   Below is a summarized list of topics that will be addressed in the Leadership Academy. Pls, see attached flyer and registration form.  Our program will be on Zoom for now.  Program starts on October 5th, Tuesday and Thursday at 3:30pm.

Art Contest for the Tobacco Prevention Program
The City of Berkeley's Tobacco Prevention Program developed a contest that focuses on the dangers youth see from flavored tobacco products. The type of art is any art that can be submitted via pdf. Please create and send an 8.5 x 11-inch size image. It can be a photo, drawing, painting, sculpture, magazine clippings, etc... There will be Target gift card prizes for the top 3 submissions as judged by the Tobacco Prevention team. The deadline to submit is November 30th. Notification of Non-Discrimination Policy
The Berkeley Unified School District is committed to providing a hostile-free working and learning environment. The District prohibits discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity/expression, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding/lactation status (related medical conditions), religion, color, national origin (including language restrictions and possession of a driver’s license (issued under Vehicle Code), ancestry, immigration status, physical or mental disability (including clinical depression and bipolar disorder, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, epilepsy, seizure disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and heart attack), medical condition (cancer-related and genetic characteristics), military and veteran status, marital status, registered domestic partner status, age (40 and above), genetic information, political belief or affiliation (unless union related), a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, or any other basis protected by federal, state or local law, ordinance, or regulation in any program or activity it conducts or to which it provides significant assistance.

Discrimination is different treatment based on a protected characteristic in the context of an educational program, work or activity without a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason that interferes with or limits the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by the District or includes an adverse employment action.

Hostile environment harassment occurs when a target is subjected to unwelcome conduct based on a protected characteristic, which is both subjectively offensive to the target and would be offensive to a reasonable person of similar circumstances/characteristics and is sufficiently so severe, and so pervasive to interfere with or limit an individual’s ability to effectively work or to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or opportunities offered by the District. Harassment may take many forms, including but not limited to, verbal remarks and name-calling, graphic and written statements, or any conduct that may be threatening or humiliating. Harassment based on any of the above protected categories is a form of unlawful discrimination and will not be tolerated by the District and can result in disciplinary action against the offending student or employee.

Upon witnessing an act of discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, based on actual or perceived protected characteristics, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when it is safe to do so. Once a school/office has expressed notice or reason to know of such conduct, whether carried out by employees, students, or third parties, it should take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate, determine what occurred, take prompt and effective steps reasonably calculated to end the conduct, eliminate a hostile environment, if one has been created and prevent the conduct from occurring again. These steps should be taken regardless of whether an individual makes a complaint or asks the school/office to take action. Complaints are protected from retaliation. The District prohibits retaliation against any person who files a complaint or an appeal, reports instances of noncompliance, discrimination, harassment, bullying, and intimidation, or who participates in the complaint-filing or investigation process. This nondiscriminatory policy applies to all acts related to school activity or school attendance within any school/office under the jurisdiction of the Berkeley Unified School District.
