[BHS Etree] BUSD: Free Fiber Internet Offer

Dear BUSD Community,

In February 2021, we announced a new partnership <https://www.berkeleyschools.net/2021/02/sonic-to-offer-free-gigabit-fiber-internet-to-busd-student-households-sonic-ofrecera-internet-de-fibra-optica-gratis-en-los-hogares-de-estudiantes-de-busd/> between BUSD, the Berkeley Public Schools Fund, and local internet provider Sonic, to offer free fiber internet to all Berkeley Unified School District student households for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year (through July 1, 2021).

We are now pleased to announce that because of recently secured federal funding through the Emergency Broadband Benefit <https://getemergencybroadband.org/> (EBB), Sonic is able to extend this offer indefinitely to eligible households.

Who qualifies now?

All households with at least one Berkeley Unified School District student, that qualify for Sonic Fiber service, and are enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program may be eligible for the free Sonic Fiber Internet service (up to 1000Mbps).

Once you’ve confirmed your household qualifies, here’s what to do next:

Call Sonic to finish your enrollment: 707-237-2461 

If you are currently using Sonic’s free service, we ask that families complete these additional enrollment steps no later than June 11, 2021, to avoid disruption of current service.

More Information

Translation Service: Although Sonic is not able to directly support sales or customer service inquiries in multiple languages, the District will make its Language Line translation service available to Sonic for BUSD families. Please call 707-237-2461 for assistance.

Sonic Service: Sonic is the deal available to BUSD households. Sonic’s Gigabit Fiber service offers symmetric (download and upload) speeds of up to 1,000Mbps on a connection more reliable than previously supplied hotspot connectivity. We’re confident this will allow for an improved distance learning experience with fewer connection issues for students. 

Helpful Tips: Please don’t cancel service with your current provider until your new service is installed. And check with your provider before canceling to avoid any unwanted cancellation fees.

En Febrero 2021, anunciamos un nuevo acuerdo entre BUSD, Berkeley Public Schools Fund, y el proveedor local de servicio de internet, Sonic, para ofrecer internet de fibra gratuita en todos los hogares de estudiantes del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Berkeley por el resto del año escolar 2020-2021 (hasta 1 de julio, 2021).
