The Berkeley High School Physics Club is pleased to announce another
exciting event in our lecture series. Here are the details:

*Topic:* CRISPR: The Science and Opportunity of Genome Editing

Nobel Laureate Dr. Jennifer Doudna will discuss fundamental research to
understand how bacteria fight viral infections and uncovered the function
of CRISPR-Cas programmable proteins that detect and cut specific DNA or RNA
sequences. Dr. Doudna will discuss current research to develop and use
genome editing molecules for biomedical and other applications. She will
also discuss the development of CRISPR-based diagnostics technology to
address the current pandemic and improve future preparedness.

*Speaker:* Jennifer Doudna

Jennifer A. Doudna is most commonly known for inventing CRISPR technology
opening up the doors for gene editing. For her work, she was awarded the
2020 Nobel Prize. She earned her PhD from Harvard Medical School. Today,
she is a professor at the University of Berkeley and is the president and
the chair of the board at the Innovative Genomics Institute, the senior
investigator at Gladstone Institutes, and an investigator with the Howard
Hughes Medical Institute. She is also a professor of cellular and molecular
pharmacology and senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
Along the way, she has written books and won numerous prizes including, but
not limited to: Alan T. Waterman Award (2000), Jacob Heskel Gabbay Award
(2014), Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2015), Princess of Asturias
Award (2015), Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science (2016), Japan Prize
(2017), Kavli Prize in Nanoscience (2018), Wolf Prize in Medicine (2020),
and Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2020). Full list of awards: (
