Hello U9 Families,

We would like to inform all BHS 9th grade families and students about some
important details related to the Small Learning Communities (SLC) Lottery
process for the 10th grade, as well as the 10th grade course selection
process.

Over the past several weeks, 9th grade students have participated in a
number of activities to learn about our SLCs so they can make an informed
decision in the upcoming SLC Lottery:

   -  *Small Learning Community Education Assembly** - *On Wednesday,
   January 13th, all 9th grade students were invited to attend a virtual where
   they learned about BHS’s five Small Learning Communities - Academic Choice
   (AC), Academy of Medicine and Public Service (AMPS), Arts and Humanities
   Academy (AHA), Berkeley International High School (BIHS), and Communication
   Arts and Sciences (CAS). Staff and students from each SLC discussed the
   academic offerings and experiences in their communities and there was an
   opportunity for Q&A. This assembly was recorded and emailed to all families
   as part of BHS Open House on January 28 and is available for viewing using

   - *BHS Course Catalog Scavenger Hunt Activity** - *During the first two
   weeks of February 2021, all 9th grade students participated in course
   catalog ‘scavenger hunt’ in their Freshman Seminar class. This activity
   guides students through the Course Catalog, paying close attention to the

*Small Learning Community Lottery Selection Day for 9th Graders*

On Wednesday, February 17th, following the schedule below, students will enter
this Zoom Room

and use a login and unique pin (provided in their email) to make their
lottery choices with their Hive counselors. It’s a quick process but
*absolutely
required*.  If for some reason students can’t make their time slot, they
should notify their Social Living teacher so they can be assigned to a
different one.

*Then what happens?  *As their parents/guardians, you’ll have a chance to
review your students’  lottery selections and they can make any changes up
to* 2/25*. Then, the lottery will be run and your child will receive their
SLC placement by the second week of March.  On Wednesday March 17th,
they’ll sign up for next year’s classes on another Zoom link that we’ll
send out at that time.

*Small Learning Community Lottery Guidelines*

During this *Lottery Selection Day on 2/17 *with the School Counselor, your
student will enter the SLC Lottery. Your student will *rank* the SLCs that
they desire to be placed in for the duration of 10th-12th grade.

The ranking rules are as follow:

   - Your student will rank their top choice as #1, second choice as #2,
   etc.
   - *Your student MUST rank BOTH AC and BIHS - our two largest SLCs*
   - Your student MAY also rank (but are not required to rank) the three
   smaller SLCs - AHA, AMPS, and CAS - IN ADDITION to ranking both AC and BIHS
   - Since our three smaller SLCs have limited seats, which means that not
      every student that hopes to be in a small SLC will get in, your student
      MUST rank BOTH AC and BIHS
      - If your student decides to rank AHA, AMPS, and/or CAS (which they
      do not have to), they DO NOT have to rank all three of these
SLCs, only the
      one(s) that they would hope to be placed in

If your student has a sibling that is currently in the SLC that will be
your student’s #1 choice in the lottery, *and that sibling will STILL be in
the SLC next year*, your student will be given priority in the lottery for
that SLC. If this situation applies to your student, they must enter the
full legal name of their sibling while entering the lottery with their
School Counselor. Your student can only enter actual siblings, not cousins,
play siblings, etc. and that sibling cannot be a current Senior that will
be graduating at the end of the school year. All sibling entries and SLC
assignments will be verified.

On or around Friday, February 19, after your student has entered the SLC
lottery, you will receive an email containing an SLC Lottery Report
detailing your student’s ranking. As the parent/guardian, you will have the
opportunity to edit the ranking and return it to BHS no later than February
25. A link for submitting your changes will be included in the email.

The goal of the computerized lottery assignment system is to provide a fair
and equitable method for school assignments while prioritizing individual
choice and ensuring student diversity across the enrollment of all of
Berkeley High School’s Small Learning Communities.

In *early-March*, your student’s SLC Lottery result will be emailed to
you. *THE
SLC LOTTERY RESULT IS FINAL*.

*Course Requests*

On Wednesday, March 17, after your student has been lotteried and notified
of their SLC assignment, they will join a Zoom session with the counselor
of their new SLC to help them make course requests for the 10th grade,
including requesting electives as appropriate within their new SLC. Hive
teachers will provide these Zoom links in advance.

In* late-March through early-April*, after your student has made course
requests, you will be able to log in with your student to view their
Illuminate portal where you can view their course requests. emailed a
Course Requests Report detailing your student’s requests. As the
parent/guardian, you will have the opportunity to edit the requests,
following the requirements from your student’s new SLC, and return them to
BHS.

Your child will receive their schedule of classes during Registration, just
prior to the start of next school year.

Si su estudiante tiene un hermano o hermana que está actualmente en una
comunidad de aprendizaje SLC que será la opción #1 de su estudiante en la
lotería, y ese hermano o hermana TODAVÍA estará en el SLC el próximo año,
su estudiante tendrá prioridad en la lotería para esa comunidad  SLC. Si
esta situación se aplica a su estudiante, debe ingresar el nombre legal
completo de su hermano o hermana al ingresar a la lotería con su consejero
escolar. Su estudiante solo puede ingresar a hermanos reales, no primos,
hermanos de juego, etc. y ese hermano no puede ser un estudiante de último
año actual que se graduará al final del año escolar. Se verificarán todas
las entradas de hermanos y las asignaciones de SLC.

A *finales de febrero*, después de que su estudiante haya ingresado a la
lotería SLC, se le enviará por correo, a su dirección de residencia como se
muestra en Illuminate, un Informe de la Lotería SLC que detalla la
clasificación de su estudiante. Como padre / tutor, tendrá la oportunidad
de editar la clasificación y devolverla a BHS.

El objetivo del sistema de asignación de lotería computarizado es
proporcionar un método justo y equitativo para las asignaciones escolares
al tiempo que se prioriza la elección individual y se garantiza la
diversidad de los estudiantes en la inscripción de todas las comunidades de
aprendizaje de Berkeley High School.
