Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are happy to welcome your children back to school!  Although we are starting the school year with distance learning, Nutrition Services will continue to provide meal service. “Grab and Go” meals including breakfast and lunch at most school sites are available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.  Please visit our website for the curbside location of all school sites and for news and updates pertaining to Grab and Go meals. Meal distribution may change as the year progresses. You may pick up Grab and Go meals at the location most convenient for you regardless of where your child is enrolled. Student name and/or student ID number is required for meal pick up.

40% of our students are eligible to receive lunch at no cost through the free/reduced price meal program. To receive benefits, be sure to fill out an online application and retain the confirmation number for your records for easy reference.

If you were on the program last year, a new application must be filled out this year in order to remain on the program. We urge all households to fill out an application even if your child does not intend to participate in school meals. Your children may qualify for free lunch, as well as other benefits

Did you know that here in Berkeley Unified, breakfast is free for all students! We want to help everyone get their day off to a strong start in preparation for the difficult work of learning ahead! If your child is not on the meal program you may pick up breakfasts at no cost at the school site most convenient for you.

Even if your student does not intend to take advantage of the lunch program, every qualified application counts towards bringing additional federal and state funding to our schools, providing additional resources for student academic support.

Some parents are concerned about listing income amounts or social security numbers on the application. 
Your information is confidential and is only used to determine your child’s eligibility for the school meal programs. Any personal information you provide will not be shared; it is protected by your civil right to privacy and will not be used by any other person, office, or government agency. Furthermore, students who receive free and reduced price meals are not identified on any public list. Teachers, staff and students do not know who is receiving free or reduced meals and who has paid.

There will be a verification number provided at the end of the online process. Please print out and keep the confirmation page, which includes the verification number so you have a record of your application.  

Within 12 to 14 days, whether you apply online or on paper, you should receive a verification letter indicating eligibility for free lunch. Please save the verification letter for your records. You can use the letter to take advantage of discounts for some services such as free or reduced prices on school yearbooks, tickets for events, and testing such as SATs. This letter remains under your control and you can choose whether to use it for additional benefits.

If you do not receive an eligibility letter, it could be that you did not provide the correct address, or in some cases an incomplete paper application was not processed. Only one form is needed per family, even if you have students at different schools in the district. Applications can be filled out any time throughout the entire year. If your income changes during the year, you may wish to fill out a new application.
Income guidelines for the BUSD free lunch program are included in the ezmealapp <https://secure.ezmealapp.com/ApplicationScreen.aspx> online form and in the FAQs about Free and Reduced Priced Meals. If your student does not qualify for free/reduced price lunch, there is a separate application for a student meal debit account for charging school lunches at www.ezschoolpay.com <https://www.ezschoolpay.com/Login.aspx>. Lunch charges are $4.00 in elementary schools, $4.50 in middle schools, and $5.00 in high schools.
