*Your Donations at Work:*

*News from the Berkeley High School Development Group*

*June 2020*

*BHSDG STATEMENT*

Like many others in the BHS community and beyond, we stand in solidarity
with the Black Lives Matter movement. Berkeley High School Development
Group affirms its commitment to equity and inclusion. We will continue to
fund programs that support these values. We pledge to take the time and
effort needed to ensure that we examine and address our biases, listen to
our community, and respond to the high schools’ needs.

*FUNDRAISING UPDATES*

*Spring Challenge Match.* A huge thank you to everyone who helped us raise
more than $56,000 for Berkeley High during our Spring Challenge Match.
Given deep projected education budget cuts and continued reliance on
distance learning, BHS will face an unprecedented need for new and improved
technology, teacher professional development, student learning resources
and support, and much more. Thanks to your donations, BHSDG will continue
to invest in our school during this historic coronavirus pandemic, and we
are actively exploring a number of significant grants in these areas that
have yet to be finalized. If you did not have a chance to contribute to the
campaign, you can still make a tax-deductible donation to Berkeley High at
www.bhsdg.org <http://bhsdg.org/wp/give/>, or without fees through PayPal
Giving <https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/charity/1356808>.

*Friends of Berkeley High Benefit Luncheon.* As local restaurants closed
their doors, BHSDG transformed this year’s in-person benefit luncheon into
a fascinating online conversation between CRISPR gene-editing co-discoverer
Jennifer Doudna and superstar BHS biology teacher Glenn Wolkenfeld. Doudna
is one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. Doudna addressed how
CRISPR can be used to fight against Covid-19, her UC Berkeley lab’s vital
role as a pop-up testing center, the ethics of gene-editing technologies,
and what everyone must do to achieve greater diversity and interest in STEM
fields. You can watch the video at: http://bhsdg.org/wp/event/

*Thanks to Our Benefit Sponsors.* Special thanks to North Berkeley Wealth
Management, Magoosh, Bebe McRae and Alexis Thompson of The Grubb Co.,
Ferrari Orthodontics, and Bayer for sponsoring the luncheon and online
conversation.

*WHAT HAVE YOUR DONATIONS FUNDED RECENTLY?*

After the local shelter-in-place order began, BHSDG transitioned to virtual
meetings in April and June. Highlights of recent grants funded include
these programs benefiting students:

*Curriculum Development to Enhance Online Learning ($6,675). *To address
the need for equity in teachers' access to curriculum development
resources, teachers of English, Social Science, and Spanish at Berkeley
Independent Study and Berkeley Technology Academy will spend the summer
planning how to extend recently adopted curriculum and approaches to the
schools' new distance-learning environment.

*Professional Development to Address Student Trauma ($500).* CAS English
teacher Max Wheeler will attend a summer course to learn ways to better
support the small school's high concentration of students who have
experienced trauma and to help CAS develop classroom environments and
curriculum that promote healing and growth.
