Good afternoon BHS families,

It has been a while since I wrote with a longer update, and I wanted to write again now as we get very close to the end of our school year. I know that all of us have been affected by the local and national outpouring of pain and rage following the unjust killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd - and that these are just names we know of, while there are many we don't. I know too that if we were at school, our students and staff would be talking, listening, and supporting each other, and it is an extra sadness that we are not able to be together right now. To our Black families, I want to say that we continue to be committed at BHS - particularly the white staff in our midst - to educating ourselves and each other around how to be the anti-racist people our students deserve. Black students should not bear that additional burden among the many unfair burdens they must carry. There is much work to be done, and we will not shy away from it. I am copying below a message that I sent to all students on Wednesday of this week should you care to read it.

Next week, our last week, will be an unusual one. There will be no teacher office hours, new content, or finals as we would have done in the past; we have instead asked teachers to support any students who have catching up to do before final Pass/No Pass grades are due. Our virtual graduation will kick off at 5:00 pm on Friday, June 12th, with a city-wide make-some-noise efforts at 5:20 and our video program starting at 5:30. More details on all of that were sent out via BHS etree today. Teachers and staff will also spend some time next week reflecting on our experience this spring with Distance Learning and planning for the fall.

And finally, speaking of the fall, so many things are unclear. As we wait and watch and listen for more clarity from our district, city, and county, we highly value your input into our planning process. I have already sent this once, and so has the district, so you do not need to fill it out again. But in case you haven't - please do. The survey closes on Monday evening., and links are directly below. Thank you everyone, and may you be safe and strong this weekend.

Message to Students:

Hi BHS Students,

I know that this spring has been so, so hard, for so many reasons. I wanted to reach out to you in this very imperfect email form and just acknowledge how much harder it has become in the last few weeks as once again our nation and our local communities respond to the racial injustice and police brutality that shape the reality in which we live. Especially to our Black students, I want to say that I know that burden falls so heavily on your shoulders, and that we adults should have done better for you and by you. You are strong, and amazing, and you deserve better.

Many of you are out taking action and demanding the change that you want and need to see. We want you to stay safe out there and we are proud of you for that.

And please, as we head into the last few days of the school year, reach out to your teachers for any support you may need to finish off as strong as you can. Next week there will be no new content, just time to catch up if it's needed. We are here to help.

Thank you for reading this, and take good care,

Ms. Schweng
