*REMINDERS: *

*World Language Placement Exam:* If you are a transfer student from a high
school outside of Berkeley Unified School District and want to be in a
language class above level 1, you will need a copy of your transcript when
you register.

Middle school students who took two years of the same language, will be
placed in Level 2 (formerly 3/4). If you want to *SKIP* level 2, you must
take the placement test to be placed in Level 3.

It is not necessary to take the placement exam if you are enrolling in
level one of any language.

*This exam will be offered on Saturday, August 1, 2020 from 10AM-noon.* The
exam will be given on the second floor of the M building - located off
Milvia above Channing. You do not need to sign up or register ahead of
time, just come on time. Some students finish the exam in 45 minutes and
others need 90 minutes, so it is difficult to say how long the exam will
last.

*BERKELEY CODING ACADEMY:*

*Change your life with code this summer*

>From July 13 - July 31, Berkeley Coding Academy
<http://berkeleycodingacademy.com/> is offering a Machine Learning & AI
summer camp for teens. The online program combines the best of the physical
classroom with the virtual classroom for an innovative, interactive
experience. At the end of the program, all students will build and evaluate
Machine Learning models (AI) in Python. No coding experience required.

Here are several factors that make BCA stand out:

   1. All teachers are Berkeley credentialed teachers.
   2. BCA content opens the gates to the most lucrative positions in the
world: Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, AI Developer.
   3. The 100% online program includes best classroom practices: live
interactive lessons, opportunities to bond with students, individual work
and group projects, and awesome teachers.

Berkeley Coding Academy was developed this Spring by BIS Math Teacher Corey
Wade. This program is an extension of his work with the AI/Machine Learning
for Youth BUSD computer club funded by BHSDG (currently online), along with
his research and writing of *The Python Workshop*. The content for Berkeley
Coding Academy is the best that Corey has to offer after 20 years in
education.

*BHS TEXTBOOK AND LIBRARY BOOK RETURNS - 5/11-6/15*

BHS will have 2 ways for students to safely return books:

*1. Ongoing, from 5/11 - 6/15 *

   - WHEN: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9am-12pm, except on BUSD holidays.
   - WHERE: Place books on the carts by the stairs in front of the Main
   Office at BHS.
   - Please make sure to wear a mask and stay 6 feet apart from other
   students dropping off books.

*2.* *During assigned lockout clean out days, from 5/26-6/2. *

There will be some delays processing returns to ensure safety.

Thank you in advance for returning books! We depend on returns to ensure
there are enough books for students in the fall.

*LOCKER CLEAN OUT REMINDER:*

Dear Students,

We miss you and we hope that you are finding ways to cope with the
challenges of sheltering in place. We know it has been difficult!

Many of you have been asking about retrieving items from your locker, and
we have been working on a plan. *Due to the current school closure, we
will have a one week period at the end of May when students may come to
campus to clean out lockers, collect personal belongings, and return
library and textbooks, from May 26 - June 2.* In order to maintain health
and safety and limit the number of individuals on campus at a given time,
students will follow a staggered schedule and may come to campus at
designated times based on grade level and last name. *Please review the
‘locker clean out schedule’ for your assigned date and time.*

As always, please follow these familiar guidelines when coming to campus:

   - If you are sick or symptomatic, stay home.
   - Wash your hands before coming to campus. School restrooms will be open
   for handwashing on campus.
   - All individuals entering the campus will be required to wear a face
   covering.
   - Maintain a minimum of 6 feet social distancing at all times.

Students will enter and exit at the Kittredge doors (Kittredge and Milvia
St.). There will be a library and textbook drop-off box located at the
Kittredge entrance for all students to return books. Art teachers will
reach out to their students with specific guidelines for picking up and
returning projects and materials. School safety officers will be present on
campus to ensure health and safety practices and provide assistance.

Thank you for your cooperation and support as we find new ways of working
together as a community and adapt to change. Stay strong, and stay healthy!
