Good afternoon everyone,
I hope you are having a restful Saturday in the midst of this incredibly strange closure period we have now entered into.
I am writing with a quick update to let you know what we are working on this weekend.
1) Technology Access: Thank you, students, for taking the survey that Mr. Albinson sent out. It gave us an idea of how many Chromebooks we will need to make ready to loan out this coming week. There will be another Google form sent out soon to gather more direct data about who needs devices, with instructions on how to pick them up at BHS. We will likely be able to begin distribution on Wednesday afternoon. Remember, nothing that is offered as ongoing learning during our closure will be required work for a grade, so please don't worry if we can't get you devices by Monday. I am aware that other groups are working on partnering with BUSD to help with this - thank you very much and we will keep coordinating together. We are also exploring hotspot options for families without reliable wifi access.
2) Health Center: Many of you have asked if the Health Center will remain open during our closure much like it does during the summer. I very much see the need for both physical and mental health services to continue, and the Superintendent and I are working with the City of Berkeley to get an answer to this question. I hope to have more of an update by the end of the weekend.
3) Volunteer Efforts: A huge THANK YOU to the many students who have stepped forward to volunteer babysitting for elementary kids during closure, meal delivery, and to meet other anticipated needs. We are working to coordinate and connect these efforts with the rest of our district and families. I will be in touch with John V. and student leaders about this directly and soon. Your willingness to help was quite moving and appreciated by all of us adults - thank you again.
4) PE Waivers: I am aware that many of you are wondering how you will complete your PE waiver, for example, if the YMCA closes or cancels group activities. Please don't worry about that right now. Stay safe and healthy, and document the hours you can if your waiver activity is still offered and it's safe for you to do so. We will have to do some sorting out of all of this once we are back in session.
That's all for now, feel free to email with questions as they come, and I will keep communicating updates as I have them.
Take good care,
Ms. Schweng
