Fundraising Updates

Friends of Berkeley High Luncheon. Don't miss BHSDG's biggest fundraising event of the year on Tuesday, March 24, at Revival Bar + Kitchen in Berkeley (networking begins at 11:15; lunch is at 12:00). The event features a gourmet meal with fine wine pairings, networking with Berkeley leaders, and live music from the Berkeley High Jazz Program. The featured speaker will be BHS parent and UC Berkeley Professor Jennifer Doudna, co-discoverer of the breakthrough CRISPR-cas9 gene-editing method and one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. Doudna will address the ethics of gene-editing technologies and what everyone must do to achieve greater diversity in STEM fields. This year’s luncheon will also focus on inspiring students at Berkeley High to pursue STEM careers. Superstar biology teacher Glenn Wolkenfeld will moderate the discussion and feature BHS students’ work analyzing areas of promise for the CRISPR technology. Tickets are $500 per person and available at http://bhsdg.org/wp/lunch/ <http://bhsdg.org/wp/lunch/>.

Thanks to Our Luncheon Sponsors. Special thanks to North Berkeley Wealth Management, Magoosh, Bebe McRae and Alexis Thompson of The Grubb Co., Ferrari Orthodontics, Bayer, and Peter Shelton Law for sponsoring. Do you know a local business that might like to be a sponsor? Contact Ed Dua to learn more about the sponsorship levels available: edwarddua at gmail.com <mailto:edwarddua at gmail.com>.

Open Board Positions. Looking for a way to get more involved with Berkeley High? Join the BHSDG Board! We are specifically looking to fill treasurer and database manager positions for 2020-2021. Come to our next meeting at 7-9 pm on Monday, April 6, in the College and Career Center to learn more, or contact Co-president Jessica Hilton at info at bhsdg.org <mailto:info at bhsdg.org>.

What Have Donations Funded Recently?

Highlights of grants funded at our March board meeting include these programs benefiting students:

First Step Awards ($37,500). Each year BHSDG awards money to low-income seniors to help defray initial expenses as they make the transition to college. This year's awards will offer critical assistance for up to 50 students to help pay for things like travel, supplies, a laptop, and winter clothes. Seniors whose expected family contribution (EFC) is $1,000 or less should talk to their guidance counselor or visit the College Career Center for an application.

Multilingual Program Hoodies ($1,350). The Berkeley High Multilingual Program (MLP) is a small learning community that currently supports 85 recently arrived immigrants as they learn to navigate a new country, language, culture, and school system. Students recently held a logo-design contest for their program. Thanks to a BHSDG grant, they will emblazon the new logo on hoodies that they hope will foster a greater sense of community within the program and increase awareness for the program among the larger BHS community.

LEAP Goes to College ($1,005). Your donations will cover transportation fees for 80 U9 students to tour Cal State East Bay. Students will hear valuable advice from students and faculty on a tour designed to help lay the foundation for success in college.
