Your Donations at Work:
News from the Berkeley High School Development Group
October 2019

Get ready for two fun ways to support BHS this fall: the annual fall fundraiser at the Cheese Board on Oct. 20 and the Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore Benefit on Nov. 9-11. And read on to learn more about the large number of new grants that donations to the Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG) have funded this month.

Fall Fundraising Events

Come out for the Cheese Board fundraiser. Join us at the Cheese Board Collective on Sunday, Oct 20, 4-6 pm, for delicious cheesy food (including mac and cheese!), wine, and dessert, featuring members of the BHS Jazz Band, all benefiting Berkeley High. Each year, the Cheese Board Collective generously donates its space, its labor (on a day off), and its delicious food to an intimate fundraising event hosted by BHSDG. The ticket price of $50 includes all food and wine. We’ll have a raffle with fabulous prizes, as well as a wine auction. Due to limited space, we can sell only 120 tickets, to adults only, please (them’s the rules for this private event). This annual fundraiser sells out every year, so be sure to get your tickets in advance at:

Shop at Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore. On the weekend of November 9-11, Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore in the Elmwood donates 17% of all sales back to BHSDG -- including purchases online and in the store. It’s a win-win-win: You can shop early for the holidays (or buy a gift certificate for future shopping), help Berkeley High, and support a 15-year-old local business as it keeps books alive. Can’t decide what to buy now? Purchase books for the BHS Library. BHS librarians are curating a wish list to be announced soon. Get over to 2904 College Avenue in Berkeley or shop online at https://www.mrsdalloways.com/ <https://www.mrsdalloways.com/>. Purchases must be made Nov. 9-11, and your receipts need to be turned in at the BHS front desk by end of November to get credit.

What Is BHSDG?

We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit foundation made up of parents and students whose mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. In the 2018-2019 school year, we directly funded $352,000 in grants, and we managed an additional $261,000 of donations and other revenue earmarked for specific learning communities, programs, and departments.

What Have Donations Funded Recently?

Your giving to BHSDG sustains programs such as after-school tutoring, computers, classroom supplies, and field trips. Without your donations, the BHS experience would simply not be the same. Highlights of grants funded at our October board meeting include these programs benefiting students:

Anti-racism professional development ($4,219). The San Francisco Coalition of Essential Small Schools (SF-CESS) will engage teachers in deep and meaningful conversations about the ways in which race and racism manifest in our daily lives, and the impact racial bias and stress can have on our students. The goal is to help educators to become “confident in and committed to disrupting patterns of racial inequity in education.”

BHS Latin Jazz Band ($3,000). Once a week after school, about 20 students in the jazz program receive extra instruction from Latin music specialist Josh Jones. The program’s Latinx students requested a band focused on Latin jazz. The Latin Jazz Band offers students from all five jazz bands a chance to come together to work on this music together.

AP Environmental Science fieldwork ($1,500). Your donations will help get 120 students down to the beach at Half Moon Bay to take part in LiMPETS (Long-term Monitoring Program and Experiential Training for Students), a hands-on, citizen-science program that monitors the coastal ecosystems of California and helps youth develop a scientific understanding of the ocean.

Chicanx/Latinx Mission field trip ($958). Students in Chicanx/Latinx literature and history classes will visit Mission Dolores to learn about the history of colonialism in California and the gentrification of the Mission neighborhood.

Simple supply center ($600). A student-organized project will supply basic necessities like socks, toothbrushes, deodorant, and razors to homeless students at BHS.

In addition, your donations funded:
Professional development for a teacher to attend the annual ACTFL foreign languages conference ($1,250)
Books for the Latin program in World Language ($1,000)
A photo printer for CAS/VAPA computer art ($750)
