*BHSDG MAY NEWS AND UPDATES*

*Matching Grant Challenge*: At the beginning of May, a very small group of
VERY generous donors issued a challenge: for every dollar that Berkeley
High community members gave to the BHSDG between May 1st and May 12th, they
would match dollar for dollar, *up to $20,000*. So, did we make it, you
are wondering - did we bring in $20,000 to take full advantage of this
amazing opportunity? *This just in:YES!!!* Many thanks to all who donated
to this challenge, as well as to the anonymous “angel” donors! Final
numbers will be announced shortly.

*Last Meeting of the Year: Monday, June 3rd, 7-9 p.m.* BHSDG will wrap up
our regular meeting, fiscal, and grant cycle in just a few weeks, as we
move towards the end of the school year. We’ll be saying goodbye to a
number of our wonderful board members: Rosa Luevano, Robin Claire Barnes,
Colleen Burns, Laurel Coates, Lisa Craypo, Deb Durant, Christine Staples,
Julie Weitz, and Anne Schonfield are all moving on at the end of the year.
Many thanks to you all for all of your work on behalf of our school
community! Of course, this means we need some more folks to step in and
run the show. If you are curious about what it is we do, and how we do it,
please pop on in! All are welcome, and we always have good snacks. (We
all take turns! :))

*Who and What is Berkeley High School Development Group?* The BHSDG is a
group of parent and student volunteers; our mission is to strengthen the
educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. We strive
for equity. We fund grants which benefit our school community and raise
the funds to support this work. We meet on the first Monday of each month
(rescheduled as needed to accommodate holidays and school breaks) from
September through June, consider grant proposals and work on ways to raise
the funds to support them. We are a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization; all donations to the BHSDG are tax deductible. *Our next
board meeting, (and last one for the school year), will be: Monday, June
3rd from 7:00-9:00 in the College Career Center. Visitors and new members
are welcome!*

In a typical year, BHSDG receives around $500,000 in donations; $250K in
gifts to the general fund, and $250K in “restricted” funds (gifts
specifically designated for a learning community or program - like AC,
BIHS, Science, Universal 9th Grade, Band and Orchestra, e.g.) Most of our
donations come from BHS community members - like you!

The Development Group accepts grant proposals from all Berkeley High School
(BHS), Berkeley Technology Academy (BTA), and Independent Studies (IS)
teachers, students, and staff on a monthly basis. (Deadline: 15th of each
month for consideration at the next Board meeting.) *Students and Staff -
if you have a great idea, submit a grant proposal!*
