PA Announcements and positive shout outs will resume after testing:
During AP/IB testing (Monday, May 6-Friday, May 31), we will not make morning announcements and positive shout outs over the PA system in order to have quiet, uninterrupted testing environments around campus.
We will send student announcements via email only from 5/6-5/31.

CCC Closed 7:30 am-3:00 pm (including lunchtime) on Tuesday, May 7th for testing
Library Closed 7:30 am-4:00 pm  (including lunchtime) onTuesday, May 7th for testing
Please do not enter the CCC or library on Tuesday, May 7th, testing will be in session. These testing areas cannot be interrupted for any reasons (drop-in meetings, printing, copying, ect)

TODAY! Cap and Gown orders will be distributed at LUNCH (11:38 am - 12:18 pm) on MONDAY, MAY 6th in the main courtyard , 3:30 - 4:00 PM. If you miss this date, then you will need to pick up your cap and gown on June 15, the date of graduation.

Graduation will be on Saturday, June 15 at 1:00 PM at the Haas Pavilion. More details about tickets, ceremony, etc. will be sent at a later date.


Change-maker Project: Starting Monday, May 6, 2019 to Friday, May 10, 2019. In this announcement we are asking students to donate: toiletries, feminine hygiene products, snacks, water, clothes, combs, old make-up, and other materials that they feel would benefit the homeless. Please bring your donations to the Leadership Office.


YEARBOOK: Hello Berkeley High! Don't leave school this year feeling empty, buy a yearbook! This year's yearbook is waiting for you. It captures the experience of life at Berkeley High School and it will give you something to look back on for years to come. These memories will last a lifetime. STUDY GROUPS: Come to the AP/ IB study groups to corse specific group studying, test prep materials, some snacks, and optional (but recommended) mindfulness!

·         Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-6:30 at 85 Degrees Bakery Cafe (21 Shattuck Ave Berkeley)

·         Saturdays from 10AM-5PM at the Berkeley Public Library - South Branch (1901 Russell St, Berkeley)


Spring 2019 Waivers:

Your signed and competed yellow portions of the Spring PE Waiver is due Friday, May 24, 2019. No exceptions will be made for missed deadlines.


Summer 2019 * PE WAIVERS
***Waivers are not electronic, you must pick up a hard copy in the BHS counseling office***

Waiver Process
1. Fill out Parts 1 & 2 of the waiver.
2. Have your coach fill out part 3 only, do not have them fill out part 4 yet. Have your coach write the letter.
a.    Letter Requirements:
 i.     MUST be on letterhead
 ii.     Your name and the date
iii.     Your coach's contact information
iv.     Assurance that you are meeting state physical standards and competencies through the activity
 v.     The specific number of hours you will be doing the activity - a minimum of 60
 vi.     The coach/director who writes and signs the letter MUST also sign the waiver at the beginning of the semester & at the end. Remember all coach signatures must be by the same coach.

3. Must provide proof of registration and/or billing statement from the organization where you plan to complete your PE credit requirement. The registration must be current to summer 2019 and must have the student's name showing he/she is registered.

4. Bring your proof and waiver to the Counseling Office no later than Thursday, June 13, 2019.  We will give you back your yellow copy. Do not lose it, you will not be provided with another copy.

5. Once you have completed your hours, have the same coach sign the yellow copy of the waiver (part 4). Bring the waiver to the counseling office by Friday, September 13, 2019.

6. Remember, your activity must:
·      Be a structured athletic program or a competitive (state-sponsored) team sport.
·      Include at least five hours of structured activities per week -- at least 60 hours for the semester.

* At present, the Berkeley YMCA is the only gym with a BHS PE waiver.  If your student is participating in a BHS Athletic Team (ie: LAX, Basketball, Football, Soccer, Baseball, etc.) they will receive credit for their participation on the team. Seniors! Come celebrate yourselves with pizza, a raffle, music, and some fun activities on Friday, May 17th! It's Decision Day!! Whether you're going into the workforce, college, or the military, it's time to celebrate your accomplishments! Again, that's Friday, May 17th at lunch in the College and Career Center! Register by heading up to the CCC or looking at one of the flyers posted around school!

Seniors! As the end of your high school career draws near, we invite you to celebrate your accomplishments, honors, and scholarships at our Senior Awards Night which will take place May 30th (Thursday) in the Little Theater at 6PM. Sign ups and RSVPs are in your e-mails from Mr. An. Or visit the CCC for more information.

SENIORS: LAST WEEK TO COMPLETE FIRST STEP AWARD APPLICATION
Seniors:  First Step Award Application is due Friday,  5/10/19 by 3 PM
The Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG) raises funds to enhance academic  projects for all high school students and to strengthen their educational experience.  One initiative includes bridge funding to college bound students whose FAFSA/ Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) for college is determined to be $1,000 or less.  The donors of BHSDG want to support students in a successful transition to higher education.  Thank you to the BHSDG and its donors!

The First Step Award is available to any qualifying student who has enrolled at an accredited four year college (or community college college for eligible Dream Act students) and shows EFC from $0-$1,000.  You may use this grant for deposits for housing, orientation, travel, books, or anything else related to college expenses.

Complete the attached application with supporting documents of college acceptance letter or email and FAFSA/EFC  by May 10, 2019.   The application must be approved and signed by a counselor or advisor.  Please submit application to the CCC.

Checks will be written by BHSDG to eligible students and distributed to students at the Senior Awards event on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 6:30 PM in the Little Theater.

In summary, here is what you need for First Step Award by 5/10/19 by 3 PM:
1. Application in attachment or in CCC and Counseling Offices
2. Counselor checks off EFC in FAFSA summary of $0-$1,000
3. Proof of college enrollment at 4 year or community college for Dream Act students- find congratulations letter in email or portal and copy.

Another reminder for UC Admitted Students:  Entry Level Writing Requirement: Test this Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Berkeley High School C Building @ 8:00 AM
Register and pay $110 for the test unless you are exempt.   If a student received a UC application fee waiver, there will also be  writing test fee waiver.

See criteria for exemption below:

ALL STUDENTS who will enter the University of California as freshmen must demonstrate their command of the English language by fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as Subject A requirement).

Students can meet this requirement by scoring:
o30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
o30 or better on the ACT, Combined English/Writing (last administered June 2015); or
o680 or better on the SAT, Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing*; or
o680 or better on the SAT Reasoning Test, Writing (last administered January 2016); or
o3 or above on either Advanced Placement Examination in English; or
o5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Higher Level English A1 exam); or
o6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Literature exam (formerly known as Standard Level English A1 exam); or
o5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A: Language and Literature exam; or
o6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A: Language and Literature exam
