BHSDG JANUARY NEWS AND UPDATES

Many thanks to all of you who were inspired by our work to make a donation to the BHSDG! December brought a flurry of generous gifts; we have raised $149,818 in general funds so far this year. Please keep it coming! No gift is too small or too large; every bit counts in our efforts to support all of our students.

EXCITING NEWS IN UPCOMING EVENTS: Hoo boy, do we have an exciting guest speaker planned for this year's Business Partners and Friends lunch for this coming Spring. Michael Lewis, author of the new bestseller The Fifth Risk, as well as Moneyball, The Big Short, The Blind Side, (and yes, a BHS parent!) has agreed to join us in a conversation with BHS parent Claire Ferrari. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19th at Revival Bar and Kitchen. Stay tuned for more details!

Who and What is Berkeley High School Development Group? The BHSDG is a group of parent and student volunteers; our mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. We strive for equity. We fund grants which benefit our school community and raise the funds to support this work. We meet on the first Monday of each month (rescheduled as needed to accommodate holidays and school breaks) from September through June, consider grant proposals and work on ways to raise the funds to support them. We are a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization; all donations to the BHSDG are tax deductible. Our next board meeting will be: Monday, February 4th from 7:00-9:00 pm in the College Career Center. Visitors and new members are welcome!

In a typical year, BHSDG receives around $500,000 in donations: $250K in gifts to the general fund, and $250K in "restricted" funds (gifts specifically designated for a learning community or program - like AC, BIHS, Science, Universal 9th Grade, Band and Orchestra). Most of our donations come from BHS community members - like you!

The Development Group accepts grant proposals from all Berkeley High School (BHS), Berkeley Technology Academy (BTA), and Independent Studies (IS) teachers, students, and staff on a monthly basis. (Deadline: 15th of each month for consideration at the next Board meeting.) Students and Staff - if you have a great idea, submit a grant proposal!
