Berkeley High School Development Group June News

Wow, can you believe it's the last week of school already? Before we part ways until August, here are some updates on what's been happening in the Berkeley High School Development Group in the last month:

We held our last Board meeting of the year on Monday, June 4th, and gave a fond farewell to departing Board members, and welcomed our new members.

Farewell and many thanks to Treasurer Lynnette Orme, members Heidi Goldstein, Richard Thomason, Paul Kirsch, Melinda Drayton, Larry Miller and Jackie Hausman, who are departing the Board this year. You will be missed!

And welcome to new members and newly elected officers: Treasurer Lynne Yee, Co-Presidents Rosa Luevano and Jessica Hilton, Vice President Jenny Morgan, Secretary Christopher Cherney, Erin Branagan, Angel Ciangi, and Deb Durant, and student Reps Colleen Burns (Academic Choice) and Nishat Sheikh (Independent Studies). We are so excited to have them join our conversations.

Free Museum Admission for BHS Class of 2018: At our Business Partners and Friends lunch with Daveed Diggs, Lawrence Rinder, Director of BAMPFA (Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive), was inspired to do something special for BHS students: he offered all members of the BHS class of 2018 free admission to BAMPFA galleries for the entire year! Here's how it works: to get free admission, BHS class of 2018 members must simply identify themselves at the front desk upon arrival. That's it! (BTW, admission to BAMPFA is free if you are under 18; regular admission for those 18 or over is $11.) Many thanks to BAMPFA and Lawrence Rinder for this great offer for our graduating seniors.

74 First Step Scholarships given out on May 23rd: For several years, BHSDG has given small scholarships to low-income seniors at BHS/BTA who have enrolled in a four year college (for Dreamers, a two year college qualifies.) This year, we received 74 applications from students whose expected family contribution on the FAFSA is $2,000 or less - the only requirement to receive the award. At the BHS-wide awards ceremony on May 23rd, BHSDG gave each of those students a $750 scholarship. Congratulations, scholars; we are so proud of you, and wish you the best as you embark on your journey!

$15,000 Spring Challenge Match Success: A huge Thank You to all who donated to our Spring Challenge Match, which amounted to almost $25,000. Add that to the $15,000 match and our total reached close to $40,000! These funds allow the Development Group to continue to pay for BHS support such as this month's grants (see below). You can make a tax-deductible donation to BHSDG at any time by going to www.bhsdg.org<http://www.bhsdg.org> and clicking on "Donate."

Recent grants approved by our all-volunteer Board include:

Special Education Counseling Stipends: stipends for 3 interns, plus supplies - $2000

GRANT PROPOSALS: The Development Group accepts grant proposals from all Berkeley High School (BHS), Berkeley Technology Academy (BTA), and Independent Studies (IS) teachers, students, and staff on a monthly basis. (Deadline: 15th of each month for consideration at the next Board meeting.) Students and Staff - if you have a great idea, submit a grant proposal! PLEASE NOTE - We will not be accepting new grant proposals until we convene again in the new school year.

The Berkeley High School Development Group is a group of parent and student volunteers; our mission is to strengthen the educational experience of every Berkeley High School student. We meet on the first Monday of each month (rescheduled as needed to accommodate holidays and school breaks) from September through June, to consider grant proposals and work on ways to raise the funds to support them. Visitors and new members are welcome! Our last board meeting of the year was: Monday, June 4th from 6:30-9:00 in the College Career Center. Stay tuned for the new dates for the 2018-2019 school year!
