Persian New Year
At 9:15 am this morning, Persian New Year began. To our students and staff who observe this great occasion: nowruz mobarak!
ASB Elections Are Today and Tomorrow
This year for ASB elections, Berkeley High will be using Ranked Choice Voting (RCV), a system of voting that allows you, the voter, to rank candidates in various elections. Here’s everything you need to know about this new system:
For each race, you will be given the opportunity to select multiple candidates for office. Just fill out your ballot as you usually would, but now you can choose second-choice and third-choice candidates in races with lots of candidates. We will only use your lower-choice votes if every candidate you ranked higher is out of the running. By not marking lower-choice votes, you not only don’t hurt your favorite candidate, you lose your voice if that candidate is eliminated.
How does RCV work? All of the first-choice votes are tallied first. Then the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. Normally, their voters would not influence the outcome of the election. However, in RCV, voters whose candidate is eliminated have their vote for their next-favorite candidate counted. This process is repeated until a clear winner emerges.
Ranked Choice Voting is the system of choice in the cities of Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco. It consistently produces winners that a vast majority of voters are satisfied with, and always produces a winner backed by a majority of voters. This allows voters to more accurately convey their preferences, instead of voting strategically. ASB Leadership elections are designed to prepare you to vote in real elections, so why shouldn’t they be conducted the same way?

Morning Sports Report
Recent wins by Jacket sports teams include: boys varsity lacrosse and girls varsity lacrosse. As a reminder: If you’re not hearing your team’s results on the morning announcements, it doesn’t mean we don’t care; we just don’t have the results. Ask your coach to send an Email message to bhsmorningannouncements at berkeley.netwith scores and other results, and we’ll be sure to share them.
Today most Jacket sports teams will go north, south and west to compete on the road (weather permitting): the badminton team travels to Mt. Eden; the boys tennis team heads to Arroyo; the varsity baseball team plays San Lorenzo on the road; the freshman baseball team meets Casa Grande in Petaluma; the boys varsity lacrosse team plays Urban in San Francisco, and the girls varsity lacrosse team plays Justin-Siena in Napa. The only home game is in the Donahue Gym, where the boys varsity volleyball team plays San Leandro High School.
