*Coach James Manuel, Girls Volleyball*

Welcome to Coach James, entering his first year at the helm of the Berkeley
Volleyball Program. Coach James says he is thrilled to have been given this
opportunity and excited to see what the future holds for the program.

His volleyball coaching career began in 2011 at Salesian College
Preparatory High School in Richmond as a Varsity Assistant and in 2014 was
named the Junior Varsity head coach. During his tenure at Salesian, the
team competed for several Tri County Athletic league and North Coast
Sectional Championships and many players continued to play volleyball at
the collegiate level. In 2016 Coach James joined the coaching staff at
Absolute Volleyball Club in San Rafael where his enthusiasm and knowledge
of the game continued to expand.

His coaching philosophy is built upon the belief of developing the whole
athlete and supporting their growth on and off the court. Coach James
believes in teaching the game of volleyball in a fun yet competitive and
challenging environment. He strives to ensure the athletes are technically
and fundamentally sound in their knowledge of the game and their
demonstration of volleyball mechanics. With an emphasis on the importance
of learning the core volleyball components of passing, serving, attacking
and defense, as well as exhibiting a positive attitude, body language, and
conduct, he also feels it’s important to reinforce the characteristics of
being a good teammate and displaying sportsmanship.

Hard work and dedication lead to success, but success cannot always be
measured by wins and losses. Over time, he feels his commitment to the
athletes and their improvement will yield results that don’t show on a stat
sheet, like effort and playing with heart. With the support of the Athletic
Department, the Administration, Berkeley High student athletes and their
families, and organizations like Berkeley Athletic Fund, year after year we
will be closer to accomplishing Coach’s goal of building Berkeley’s
volleyball program into a Bay Area power house.

GO Yellowjackets!
