*(Berkeley High Families Owning Learning Differences)*



BOLD is a support group for parents of children with Learning Differences.
This group, formed in 2013 by Berkeley High parents, meets on the 2nd
Monday* of the month at Berkeley High in the College and Career Center from
6:30-8:30. BOLD is dedicated to finding ways to support, empower and
educate students with learning disabilities and their families by fostering
understanding and advocating for effective intervention.



Our meetings present helpful informational topics relevant to parents of
high school students with learning disabilities and forums where parents
can voice their concerns, find resources and information and find a
community.



Our first meeting will be held on Monday September 19 from 6:30-8:30 in the
College and Career Center in the D building of BHS.



For the first hour of our meeting, Larissa Cummings, a staff attorney at
the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) here in Berkeley
who specializes in special education law will update us on news about
DREDF's ongoing special education advocacy in the Berkeley Unified School
District, including its May 2015 dyslexia-focused compliance complaint and
its August 2015 disability discrimination complaint with the U.S.
Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR). She will be
accompanied by Deborah Jacobson, a private special ed attorney, who is
helping DREDF develop the dyslexia case.



The second hour will be a forum to meet new and old members and take note
of parent’s issues and concerns for the new school year.
