Berkeley High Mountain Bike Team Senior Nico Theunissen wins NorCal league and places 4th in State Championships!!! The team finishes its 2016 Season Strong.

The co-ed Berkeley High Mountain Bike team again continued to impress as the team of over 40 racers just finished the NorCal season and they returned from the California State Championships near Santa Barbara this past weekend.

Senior Nico Theunissen finished the NorCal league with the Varsity Boys Leader title, a first for Berkeley High! Nico followed up his stellar conference performance with a 4th place finish at States, competing against a field of 60 of the top riders from across the state!

Senior Rene Warren, the captain of the "Lady Jackets" wrapped up her 4th season with a great performance at States - riding in the top-10 for most of the race and finally finishing 43rd. Head Coach Nick Hoeper-Tomich was tremendously proud of his senior leader noting that "Rene has been training and working so hard all season, and has developed into a natural leader and a source of inspiration for the growing group of younger female riders."

Also riding strong this season: Sophomore Roberto Cribley jumped up to the JV class finishing the season in an impressive 2nd place for the season and 20th at States and sophomore Max Barmack, also racing JV finished in 4th for the season. Sophomore racer Oliver Cadzen finished 2nd overall and close behind was sophomore Jared Donahue finishing 5th for the season. Special kudos to freshman Nick Kluger who finished the season in 4th, and to Saul Chaplin who continued to grow with each race, as he finished in 9th for the season but finished a very impressive 14th in states out of the top 90 racers in California!

Of note, other riders that had spectacular seasons: In the Freshman Boys: Henry Grand 11th and place, Noah Fairles 16th, Kolya Popovic 22nd, Emmet Gomes-McEwen 26th. In the, Freshman Girls, Imogen Ross finished the season in 16th, Knoa Tsang-Jaffee 19th, In the Sophomore boys division: Alex Whilhite -12th, Malcolm Duncan-Graves -13th, Ben Sheer 25th. Sophomore girls: Olena Gomez -15th, Maya Alter 21st. JV Boys: Thomas Spycher 20th, Gram Nitschke 26th, Josh Kluger 29th and Sam Clewans 34th. JV Girls Rene Warren finished 14th, Yi Lien Lu 30th. Varsity Boys - Adam Goldstein finished 24th for the season.

Note: The BHS mountain bike team welcomes all students and is looking to add fun loving student athletes for the 2017 season, watch for notices and flyers next year!!! 1 year of PE credit will be applied for this team.
