Dear Berkeley High Families,

I wanted to address questions I have received from parents and guardians 
about the partial blackout at Berkeley High yesterday morning.

As with other Berkeley Unified Schools, we kept our students in school 
during the blackout rather than sending them home. We had heard the 
power was going to return within three hours and we thought students 
were safer in school than going home when traffic lights weren't working 
and Berkeley BART was offline.

Half of our classrooms had power during the blackout. In areas that were 
rendered unsafe due to the loss of electrical light, such as darkened 
bathrooms, we limited access to these areas. We also assigned extra 
staff to supervise dark spaces during the blackout such as the first 
floor hallway of the C Building.

There is confusion I wish to address related to an incident that took 
place yesterday morning before the blackout. A student fell down the 
stairs in the D Building due to reasons we are in the process of​​

determining. I can say with certainty the student was not pushed by 
another student or person.

At the time of this scary incident, firefighters were on campus visiting 
a fire science class, so emergency personnel responded to the student 
immediately. The student is recovering and will return to school 
tomorrow. This incident happened before the blackout and in no way was 
related to the loss of power in the D Building.

Student safety remains a top priority at Berkeley High School.
