On Wednesday, April 13, 2016, Berkeley High School students will have a
storytelling festival. This event was inspired by the teaching of Chinua
Achebe's novel */Things Fall Apart, /*a novel which features various
oral traditions including proverbs, chants, folk tales and of course,
storytelling.
BHS teacher Alan Miller is looking for 8 volunteers from 8:00 a.m. until
11:00 a.m. to welcome and usher students into their seats, to pick up
lost items afterward, and to be an adult presence.
The three storytellers represent different traditions, styles,
temperaments, and referents. *Charlie Chin*, writer, musician,
historian, currently works at the Chinese Historical Society of America
in San Francisco. He is a student of the late Storytelling Master, Leong
Chi Ming of Toisan, China. Internationally acclaimed storyteller *Diane
Ferlatte* accompanied by her musical sidekick Erik Pearson on banjo &
guitar, brings programs to life through interactive songs, sign
language, humor, as well as Diane’s enthralling tales. *Kanyon
Sayers-Roods* is Costanoan Ohlone and Chuman; she also goes by her given
Native name, Hahashkani, which is Chuman means “Coyote Woman.” She is
proud of her heritage and is very active in the Native Community.
Please let me know if you able to help out.
Thank you,
Lisa
