Dear BHS Community,
This afternoon at approximately 4:15 PM, a Berkeley High Staff member saw a non-student who was in possession of a gun on Milvia street near the eastern side of our campus. Berkeley Police and BHS Safety Officers immediately responded and, in the ensuing few minutes, were able to successfully detain the individual as well as another non-student. Neither were found to be in possession of the weapon, and police are continuing to conduct a search this evening in areas surrounding campus to recover it. We have no reason to believe that the weapon was ever on our campus.
These individuals, as well as several BHS students, were engaging in posturing, threatening behavior this afternoon when the weapon was seen. We believe that this afternoon’s incident is related to an incident that happened yesterday evening in downtown Berkeley, in which a Berkeley High student was assaulted by a group of teenagers. In terms of today’s incident, we are conducting our own investigation as well as working with BPD and neighboring school districts.
Our students’ safety is of paramount importance, and I want to publicly thank our BHS safety officers, along with BPD, for responding quickly and professionally, and keeping everyone safe this afternoon at BHS. For the remainder of this finals week, we will have extra safety staff on duty, administrators visible on campus throughout the day, and will be working with BPD to ensure that extra officers will be available should we need them. As soon as any additional, relevant information comes to light, we will share it with the community immediately.
Thank you for your attention and good evening,
Sam Pasarow,
Principal
