The Berkeley High Bridge Program is looking for volunteers who are
interested in tutoring first generation college bound students in the
9th-12th grades. Students primarily need tutoring in basic math (Algebra
1, Geometry, Algebra 2) and science (chemistry and biology) classes;
however, if you are able to tutor in another subject, we can definitely
use your help! It is important to note that volunteers do not have to be
an expert in any subject area.
Bridge takes place after school every day from 3:30-5:30pm. Any time you
are able to donate would be helpful! If you are unable to volunteer,
please tell a friend or neighbor who might be interested. For more
information, please email Jessie Luxford, the Bridge Coordinator,
(jessieluxford at berkeley.net <mailto:jessieluxford at berkeley.net>).
Below is a brief description of the Bridge program at Berkeley High.
_The Bridge Program at Berkeley High_:
The Berkeley High Bridge Program delivers intensive, direct,
school-based services to students and families of first-generation
college candidates. The program combines highly personalized advising
with school-based collaborative supports for the daily and yearly
academic pursuits of its students. Bridge provides the commitment of a
creative and dedicated team of support teachers while demanding a
significant investment of time, energy, and effort from students as they
develop skills, competences, and the ability to navigate the often
complex pathway to a college education.
Beginning with the summer session prior to their 9th grade year, and
continuing with daily afternoon meetings, weekend study sessions, and
regular tutorials throughout their four years at Berkeley High School,
Bridge students often invest between 150 and 250 additional academic
hours per year in their education.
