Dear Members of the Community,

Given the recent completion of the South of Bancroft Construction Project,
steps were taken this summer to move forward and begin work on other
necessary upgrades. Below is a brief scope of the work in progress and
projected timeline for the completion of the improvement projects.

Donahue Gym:

During the course of the project, the contractor discovered that some of
the major glu-lam beams at the roof have dry-rot on their ends where they
connect to the concrete columns. The damage was unexpected and has been
inspected and reviewed by our structural engineer. All these areas of
damage seem to be due to leaking scuppers at the roof drain areas.
Apparently 5 out of 6 places have some sort of leak which contributed to
this condition.

A repair has been determined and is being reviewed by the Division of the
State Architect for approval. All California schools construction projects
are under the jurisdiction of the State Architect.

At this time the work is projected to be completed no later than the first
week in October, 2015. At that time, all repairs and improvements to the
Donahue Gym will be completed and the building should be available for the
district to take occupancy.

We are working to minimize any disruption this may cause to our school
community and will be relying on our other gyms, in particular the M Gym,
to accommodate any classes or practices which may be disrupted during this
period.

We will provide weekly updates as new information becomes available.

Respectfully,

Jorge Melgoza

Vice Principal, Berkeley High School
