Dear BHS Community:
Last month with the support of the Berkeley Athletic Fund (BAF), 7
donated Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) were installed on the
BHS campus. (Additional funding was needed for the protective wall
cabinets, signage, new pads, etc.)
Our Coaches are or are becoming certified in CPR and AED use, as well
as First Aid.Our School Safety Officers are also trained in CPR and
AED use.
The locations are:
1.A Building -- Community Theatre, on south wall of lobby just
inside main doors
(Available during and after school day only if scheduled activities in
theatre)
2.D Building -- Main corridor, east wall, just outside Cafeteria
(Available during school day/Available after school day only if
scheduled activities in building)
3.E Building -- Corridor between Jacket Gym and Pool, north wall by
the gym doors
(Available during school day/Available after school day only if
scheduled activities in building)
4.F Building -- Inside Donahue Gym, northwest corridor on way to
home locker room
(Available during and after school day only if scheduled activities in gym)
5.H Building --Inside OCI office, Room H104, on south wall
(Available only during school day)
6.M Building -- Central lobby, ground floor, south wall by door to
Soft Mat Room
(Available during school day/Available after school day only if
scheduled activities in building)
7.Jacket Stadium Field Snack Bar -- K101, just inside the door, on
the wall to the right
(Available after school day only if scheduled activities at facility)
Please look for these AEDs the next time you are on campus, and please
point these out to your children and others.
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurs in one of every 200 high schools
annually, with the great majority of SCAs at schools occurring in
adults. Yet in a span of 5 months in 2009-2010, 2 high school
basketball players died of SCA; 1 was resuscitated by immediate
bystander CPR.A large study has shown that 2x as many people survive
SCA if lay responders are trained and equipped with automated external
defibrillators (AEDs) and CPR, compared to CPR alone.
An AED is a portable device that delivers a shock to the heart to help
restore normal heart rhythms or restart a stopped heart. By placing
AEDs on school grounds, students are safer, and so are teachers,
staff, administrators, parents, and visitors. The daily reminder of
seeing AEDs hanging on the corridor walls will also lead to a cultural
change at BHS, emphasizing the need for all of us to be prepared to
recognize and respond to a SCA through CPR and the use of an AED.
There will also be opportunities in the future for parents etc. to
become trained in CPR/AED and First Aid; look for information on the
e-tree soon!
