SAT Word of the Week: Obstreperous - noisily and stubbornly defiant;
aggressively boisterous.

FINANCIAL AID:  The FAFSA and the CA Dream Act application periods are open
from January 1, 2014 - March 2, 2014.  In order to receive the best
financial aid package that you are eligible for, you are highly encouraged
to submit your FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application as early as possible. 

Please note that many private colleges require the CSS Profile application
as well. Please check with individual college admissions offices and/or
financial aid offices for the requirements and deadlines. 

SAVE THE DATE: We will have our Financial Aid "Cash for College" workshop on
January 30th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Berkeley High School Library.  At
this workshop, seniors and parents/guardians will receive hands-on support
with completing financial aid applications.  BHS College Advisors and
financial aid experts from the East Bay Consortium will be providing
assistance at this event.

*Steps to be prepared for the Cash for College Workshop:

1. Be prepared with student and parent social security numbers or taxpayer
identification numbers.

2. Bring your family's most recent federal tax forms, such as 1040, W-2,
bank statements, etc. You will not have to reveal this information to
anyone, but you will need it to complete the forms.  If your family's 2013
federal tax returns are not ready yet, bring 2012 tax returns for
estimating.

3. Check college / university websites for special financial aid deadlines
and forms (i.e. Collegeboard's CSS Profile)

SAVE THE DATE: MARCH 6, 2014 - PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF BHS JUNIORS C/O 2015:

We will be hosting an evening presentation for parents and guardians of
juniors on Tuesday, March 6th, at 6:30 pm in the BHS Library. College
Advisors Angela Price and Skyler Barton will discuss items related to
preparing for the college application process.

SENIORS

Community College - Stay tuned for upcoming Community College Information
Sessions and a Local Community College Fair, to be hosted in the College and
Career Center in February.  College advisors will also host Community
College application workshops and assist students with registering for
assessment testing.  More information coming soon.

1.  Sending Test Scores:  

Sending Test Scores to CSU's:  SAT - List the CSUMentor institution code so
that CSUMentor can store your scores for any CSU campus to retrieve.  The
CSUMentor institution code for the SAT is 3594.

ACT - If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you
can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to additional campuses.
Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for
your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. If you have not yet arranged for
your ACT scores to be sent to a CSU campus, you can learn how to request
this at www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html.

Private Colleges:  You must send the test scores to each individual campus.

2. Sending Mid-Year Grade Reports:  For schools on the Common App, your
counselor who you have identified to provide a Secondary School Report will
also upload your mid-year report (transcript) online.  For non-Common App
schools that require mid-year reports, you must submit a transcript request
form with a stamped and addressed envelope to our Registrar's Office, D-173.
Please check all of your accounts and school websites for requirements and
deadlines.  We recommend that you check all of your accounts and school
portals at least once per week for updates.

3.  A Few CSU's Still Accepting Undergraduate Applications for Fall 2013: A
handful of CSU's will continue to accept applications on a space available
basis, including CSU East Bay, CSU Dominguez Hills, and Cal Maritime.

CSU East Bay: Applications are still open! CSUEB offers a variety of
academic programs, including highly regarded business administration options
and pre-professional programs in medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy,
physical therapy, veterinary science, allied health sciences, law and

4.  Educational Opportunity Program (EOP): What is Educational Opportunity
Program (EOP)? The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to
improve access for and retention of historically low-income and
educationally disadvantaged students. An EOP student has the potential and
demonstrated motivation to perform satisfactorily at a CSU, but has not been
able to realize this potential because of economic or educational
background. The program provides admission and academic assistance to
EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In many cases, the program offers
financial assistance to eligible students. Campuses tailor their programs to
accommodate the needs of their student population (CSUMentor.edu)

Who May Apply?

Only historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged undergraduate
students who need admission assistance and support services to succeed in
college are admitted to EOP. They must demonstrate academic potential and
motivation, be California residents or otherwise eligible, and meet the
income criteria.

How to apply to EOP:  In your CSU application, answer "yes" to the question
asking if you would like to be considered for the EOP.  After submitting a
CSU application, you will receive a confirmation page. On the confirmation
page, click on the EOP link.

If you are planning on applying to EOP and would like to receive assistance
with your application, please visit your College Advisor (Ms. Price or Mr.
Barton) for support.

5. SET UP YOUR COLLEGE ACCOUNTS AND PORTALS:  After applying to
colleges/universities, check your e-mail accounts frequently.  You will
likely receive contact from the colleges you have applied to, traditionally
providing instructions and information to set up your account with the
particular school you have applied to.  These accounts, often referred to as
portals, will be your main line of communication with each particular
college/university.  We recommend checking for updates frequently!  

6. CSU PLACEMENT TESTS: CSU requires you to take the English Placement Test
(EPT) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) before you enroll. Your
scores are not used for admission purposes, but they do determine which math
and English courses you should take to begin your career at CSU.  Most
students will have to take the exam, but there are some circumstances under
which you may be exempt. Seniors: If you are planning on attending a CSU, we
encourage you to take care of this requirement (Placement Tests) early in
the spring. By completing this process early, you will not have to worry
about missing any deadlines for this requirement. Free online preparation

*You may take the EPT, ELM or both at a campus near you or where you plan to
enroll. 

7.  Common App - The new CA4 Version:  The new version of the Common App has
experienced some glitches throughout the first month or so.  Some issues
have been fixed and other glitches are currently being addressed. Here are
some basic tips and recommendations:

a.      Save your work constantly!

b.      Don't wait until the last minute to submit your application.

c.      Compose your essay in Word and save it.  Do not type your essay
directly into the application.  Copy your essay from Word into Notepad.
Then, copy it form Notepad and paste it into your application.  This seems
to be the best method thus far.  This is a lot of steps, but the formatting
and word count has been off on many applications where students copied
directly from Word.

d.      Use the Print Preview before submitting the application.  Review
every section and be sure to answer EVERY question.  Be sure to proofread
your essay.

e.   Invite your recommenders early in the process. *After inviting your
recommender, confirm their receipt of the Common App Recommender invitation.

8. Advising Appointments for Seniors:  Sign-up sheets are available in the
College & Career Center. Seniors may also drop in any day before school, at
lunch or after 6th period without an appointment to have questions answered.

9. College Advisor assignments:  Ms. Price - BIHS and AC students with last
names L-Z.

Mr. Barton - AHA, AMPS, CAS, GRN and AC students with last names A-K.

10. Seniors who are applying to colleges that are not on the Common
Application: please review this message for document submission

guidelines*

a. If the college does not use the Common Application:

- Download the required form (Secondary School Report) from the college
website.

- Complete a "Transcript Request Form" (available from the BHS Registrar's
Office in D173) and sign it.  If you are under 18, the parent or guardian
must sign.

- Paper-clip the Transcript Request Form and the college's form to a large
manila envelope addressed to the college, with the Berkeley High School
address as the return address.  Put on $1.38 in postage (that is the large
envelope 3 oz. rate).

- Turn in all the large manila envelopes to the College and Career Center
ASAP for those applying Early Decision/Early Action (the original deadline
to turn these in was Oct. 1) and by November 1 for those applying regular
admission.  Attach the College Application Checklist (available at the
College and Career Center or in your senior folder) to the front of the
envelopes.

b. Completing forms for schools that only require an official transcript and
not a Counselor Recommendation:

Submit the following forms to the Registrar in room D173:

- A signed transcript request form for each college.  If you are under 18,
your parent or guardian must sign it.

- Clip each transcript request from to a stamped business-size envelope
addressed to the college with Berkeley High School as the return address.
Clip all forms and envelopes together.

Remember, CSU's and UC's do not require letters of recommendation for
admission purposes.  CSU's usually request transcripts, but they do so
individually and they do not all have the same deadlines.  UC's will
traditionally request official transcripts in the spring, from students who
are accepted to their university.  It is important to check your email
accounts frequently.

For colleges using the Common App, the counselor submitting the letter of
recommendation (also known as the Secondary School Report) will also
electronically upload and submit the mid-year report and final transcript.

11. GET EDUcated!  EDU, Inc. - COMMON BLACK COLLEGE APPLICATION:  Apply to
32 member institutions for a one-time fee of $35. For information and to

12. SENIOR GRADES COUNT!  Whether you are applying to a private
college/university, CSU, UC, or out of state public school, senior year
grades count!  While you may be admitted to a college in the winter or early
in the spring, this is traditionally a preliminary or "conditional"
admittance pending receipt of your official senior year grades.

Berkeley High School students for career and college exploration.  Students

COLLEGE INFORMATION & INTERVIEW SESSIONS

1. California College of the Arts hosts National Portfolio Day!  January 18,
2014 - 1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco. Tours and presentations 10AM-12PM,
Portfolio reviews 12PM-4PM. For more information, visit portfolioday.net or

aimed to be an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a future in the
visual and related arts. 

2.  Black College Expo for 11th and 12th graders - Saturday, January 25,
2014.  9AM-5PM.  Meet one-on-one with college recruiters, get application
fees waived, get accepted to colleges on the spot, and participate in
seminars and workshops. Students are encouraged to bring several copies of

SCHOLARSHIPS

BERKELEY COMMUNITY FUND SCHOLARSHIP MEETING:  The Community Fund provides
4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically talented and
resilient Berkeley High School students.  We will be hosting a second
informational meeting in the College and Career Center (D-221) for seniors
who missed the December presentation and are interested in applying for this
scholarship.  The meeting date is February 6th during the lunch period.

Elena Castaneda Memorial Scholarship: This scholarship was created to honor
Berkeley educator and social justice advocate Elena Castaneda. Elena was
particularly committed to assisting young people who spoke English as their
second language in obtaining a quality education. This scholarship is given
annually to a Berkeley High School student whose first language was Spanish
and who has worked to learn English and complete the course work necessary
to be admitted to a four-year college or university. This scholarship is
also intended for those attending two-year colleges.

THE GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)
Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was
established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American
Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American
students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education
in any discipline area of interest.  For more information, please visit

*2014 Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival Community Service
Scholarship: This scholarship program is for graduating seniors of Japanese
descent in Northern California.  Applicants must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA
and actively involved in the community.  Applications are due by Monday,
March 17, 2014.  Applications are available in the College and Career
Center.   

STUDENTS RISING ABOVE - For Current Juniors, C/O 2015: Students Rising Above
is looking for high school juniors who have demonstrated strength of
character in the face of challenging odds, and dream of a college education.
Selected students come from low-income households and are rising above
tremendous difficulties and succeeding in school and in life despite their
circumstances at home.  These difficulties include poverty, neglect,
violence, addiction and homelessness. Applicants are required to have a 3.0

University of Michigan: College of Engineering Giesinger Scholarship - This

Organization composed of persons of Italian ancestry (including their
