Dear BHS Families:

This afternoon we rehearsed lockdown procedures at BHS. Staff and students
must maintain some basic fluency in how to shelter themselves should a
violent threat to our campus arise.

Safety Officers and teachers helped secure the campus in a matter of a few
minutes this afternoon, and while there are always aspects of this procedure
that warrant review and fine tuning, we are generally pleased with our
response.

One key component to discuss and reiterate with students is that whenever a
lockdown procedure is initiated, for the purposes of rehearsing or for an
actual incident, students should proceed to the nearest secured space or
classroom immediately.

Often times students will have a tendency to try and get to their assigned
classrooms if, for instance, they are out of class or the call comes during
a passing period. PLEASE review with students as we did this afternoon that
when the lockdown procedure is called they are to get to the first open
classroom rather than trying to proceed to their assigned class.

It is a small but highly important distinction that, amidst the chaos and
confusion of an actual threat or incident, could make a significant
difference in terms of student safety.

Respectfully,

Pasquale Scuderi

Principal

Berkeley High School
