SAT Word of the Week: Euphony - Pleasant, harmonious sound. 

1. CSU Application Workshops:  College Advisors are conducting CSU
application workshops after school from 3:40 - 5:00 pm in the Library
Computer Lab.  Students do not need to sign up ahead of time.  Application
workshops will continue throughout the month of November.

*We only have a handful of school days left until the CSU and UC November
30th deadline! College Advisors will host an additional application workshop
on Monday, Nov. 25th, from 3:40-5:00 p.m.

2.  Sending Test Scores:  

Sending Test Scores to UC's:   Remember, when sending test scores to UC's,
you only need to send them to ONE UC, and all other campuses will then have
access to your scores.

Sending Test Scores to CSU's:  SAT - List the CSUMentor institution code so
that CSUMentor can store your scores for any CSU campus to retrieve.  The
CSUMentor institution code for the SAT is 3594.

ACT - If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you
can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to additional campuses.
Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for
your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. If you have not yet arranged for
your ACT scores to be sent to a CSU campus, you can learn how to request
this at www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html.

*If you are registered for the December ACT or SAT, you can arrange for your
scores to be sent to the schools you are applying to prior to taking the
test.  You can avoid delays by following this process.

Private Colleges:  You must send the test scores to each individual campus.

3.  Educational Opportunity Program (EOP): What is Educational Opportunity
Program (EOP)? The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to
improve access for and retention of historically low-income and
educationally disadvantaged students. An EOP student has the potential and
demonstrated motivation to perform satisfactorily at a CSU, but has not been
able to realize this potential because of economic or educational
background. The program provides admission and academic assistance to
EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In many cases, the program offers
financial assistance to eligible students. Campuses tailor their programs to
accommodate the needs of their student population (CSUMentor.edu)

Who May Apply?

Only historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged undergraduate
students who need admission assistance and support services to succeed in
college are admitted to EOP. They must demonstrate academic potential and
motivation, be California residents or otherwise eligible, and meet the
income criteria.

How to apply to EOP:  In your CSU application, answer "yes" to the question
asking if you would like to be considered for the EOP.  After submitting a
CSU application, you will receive a confirmation page. On the confirmation
page, click on the EOP link.

If you are planning on applying to EOP and would like to receive assistance
with your application, please visit your College Advisor (Ms. Price or Mr.
Barton) for support.

4. SET UP YOUR COLLEGE ACCOUNTS AND PORTALS:  After applying to
colleges/universities, check your e-mail accounts frequently.  You will
likely receive contact from the colleges you have applied to, traditionally
providing instructions and information to set up your account with the
particular school you have applied to.  These accounts, often referred to as
portals, will be your main line of communication with each particular
college/university.  We recommend checking for updates frequently!  

5.  Common App - The new CA4 Version:  The new version of the Common App has
experienced some glitches throughout the first month or so.  Some issues
have been fixed and other glitches are currently being addressed. Here are
some basic tips and recommendations:

a.      Save your work constantly!

b.      Don't wait until the last minute to submit your application.

c.      Compose your essay in Word and save it.  Do not type your essay
directly into the application.  Copy your essay from Word into Notepad.
Then, copy it form Notepad and paste it into your application.  This seems
to be the best method thus far.  This is a lot of steps, but the formatting
and word count has been off on many applications where students copied
directly from Word.

d.      Use the Print Preview before submitting the application.  Review
every section and be sure to answer EVERY question.  Be sure to proofread
your essay.

e.   Invite your recommenders early in the process. *After inviting your
recommender, confirm their receipt of the Common App Recommender invitation.

6. College Essay Readers are now available Monday through Thursday from
8:00-9:00 AM, during the lunch period, and after 6th period (3:40 PM).
Essay Readers will also be available on Friday mornings at 8:00 AM and
during the lunch period (not after school).

7. Advising Appointments for Seniors:  Sign-up sheets are available in the
College & Career Center. Seniors may also drop in any day at lunch or after
6th period without an appointment to have shorter questions answered.
Please note that college advisors will be conducting application workshops
in the Library Computer Lab after school on Tuesday and Thursday.

College Advisor assignments:  Ms. Price - BIHS and AC students with last
names L-Z.

Mr. Barton - AHA, AMPS, CAS, GRN and AC students with last names A-K.

8. Seniors who are applying to colleges that are not on the Common
Application: please review this message for document submission

guidelines*

a. If the college does not use the Common Application:

- Download the required form (Secondary School Report) from the college
website.

- Complete a "Transcript Request Form" (available from the BHS Registrar's
Office in D173) and sign it.  If you are under 18, the parent or guardian
must sign.

- Paper-clip the Transcript Request Form and the college's form to a large
manila envelope addressed to the college, with the Berkeley High School
address as the return address.  Put on $1.38 in postage (that is the large
envelope 3 oz. rate).

- Turn in all the large manila envelopes to the College and Career Center
ASAP for those applying Early Decision/Early Action (the original deadline
to turn these in was Oct. 1) and by November 1 for those applying regular
admission.  Attach the College Application Checklist (available at the
College and Career Center or in your senior folder) to the front of the
envelopes.

b. Completing forms for schools that only require an official transcript and
not a Counselor Recommendation:

Submit the following forms to the Registrar in room D173:

- A signed transcript request form for each college.  If you are under 18,
your parent or guardian must sign it.

- Clip each transcript request from to a stamped business-size envelope
addressed to the college with Berkeley High School as the return address.
Clip all forms and envelopes together.

Remember, CSU's and UC's do not require letters of recommendation for
admission purposes.  CSU's usually request transcripts, but they do so
individually and they do not all have the same deadlines.  UC's will
traditionally request official transcripts in the spring, from students who
are accepted to their university.  It is important to check your email
accounts frequently.

For colleges using the Common App, the counselor submitting the letter of
recommendation (also known as the Secondary School Report) will also
electronically upload and submit the mid-year report and final transcript.

9. GET EDUcated!  EDU, Inc. - COMMON BLACK COLLEGE APPLICATION:  Apply to 32
member institutions for a one-time fee of $35. For information and to view

COLLEGE VISITS

Many college representatives visit Berkeley High's College and Career Center
every year. Seniors may attend up to 10 of these meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class you are missing. Sign up in advance in
the College and Career Center and pick up a permission slip for obtaining
teacher permission.

COLLEGE FAIR - Enjoy an opportunity to meet and chat with college admissions
officers and representatives from over 60 colleges/universities.  More
details coming soon (including time of day).

CASE STUDIES - The Case Studies Workshop will group students and parents
with college admissions officers to discuss what colleges look for when
admitting students. Learn how college admissions representatives analyze
mock applications and make their decisions.  RSVP guidelines coming soon.  

JUNIORS & SOPHOMORES

SAT/ACT PRACTICE COMBO TEST:  Saturday, December 7th, 9:00-1:30 p.m.  

Berkeley High College and Career Center is partnering with Princeton Review
to host this practice combo test opportunity for BHS juniors and sophomores.

Practice Test - The ACT/SAT Combo Practice Test will contain questions from
all subjects tested on the ACT and SAT.  

Registration for juniors began on Nov. 13th, and registration for sophomores
will begin on Nov. 18th. Students may submit a check payable to the BHS
College/Career Center, before school, during lunch, or after school
(3:30-4:00pm), in the College and Career Center.  Regular price is $20 and
fee reductions are available for students who qualify for Free Lunch. 

Thursday, December 12th (6:00pm - 7:00pm):  

Results and Strategies Seminar - Students who take the practice test will
receive a detailed analysis of their performance, helping them determine
which test is right for them.  Location - BHS College/Career Center (D-221)

SOPHOMORES

BHS Alumni College Panel, Thursday, December 19, Periods 1 - 6: Each year
the College and Career Center and BHS Counselors organize college panel
discussions for BHS sophomores.  BHS graduates representing all of our
communities are looking forward to attending this college panel.  Every 10th
grade English class at BHS will attend this experience over the course of
the day.  Teachers prepare their students in advance with questions about
college life, college admissions, college preparation, etc.  This is a very
informative and motivating event for our BHS sophomores.

COLLEGE INFORMATION & INTERVIEW SESSIONS

1. California College of the Arts hosts National Portfolio Day!  January 18,
2014 - 1111 Eighth Street, San Francisco. Tours and presentations 10AM-12PM,
Portfolio reviews 12PM-4PM. For more information, visit portfolioday.net or
cca.edu/portfolioday  This event is free and open to the public, and is
aimed to be an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a future in the
visual and related arts. 

2.  Black College Expo for 11th and 12th graders - Saturday, January 25,
2014.  9AM-5PM.  Meet one-on-one with college recruiters, get application
fees waived, get accepted to colleges on the spot, and participate in
seminars and workshops. Students are encouraged to bring several copies of

SCHOLARSHIPS

THE GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)
Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was
established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American
Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American
students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education
in any discipline area of interest.  For more information, please visit

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM:  To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens
or permanent residents, Black or African American and current high school

activities and demonstrate financial need.  Applications are available in
the College and Career Center.  Applications are due January 9th in order to
