The message below is from BHS History and English teacher Rachel
Chodorow-Reich:
Dear BHS Parents and Community Members,
Welcome back to the new year!
Good news. The course, "Nonviolence: Theory and Practice" is going to be
offered as a half-class, 7th period class. That means students get 5 credits
and it boosts their GPA, but it's half the meeting time and half the work.
Students should sign up if: They are interested in social change/improving
their own life/ the world; they want to help plan, and be a part of, a class
designed to provide the skills they need and desire to be successful in
life; they want to be inspired and excited about the possibilities for
change; they want to move towards bringing peace into the world and ending
violence.
The class will meet Mondays after school for 2-2.5 hours. If they have a
Monday afternoon conflict for part of the year it may still work.
If you know a student who is interested please have them contact me and come
to our first 1.25 hour meeting on Monday, 9/9, from 3:45-5 pm in my
classroom, A101.
Please contact me to ask any questions.

Classroom: A101
Take care, and thank you for your interest and support,

More about the course below, from an email originally sent by Chris Young
(former BHS History Teacher and Activities Director), who I co-designed the
course with:
We are very excited about the potential impact of this course, and would
like to personally recruit a strong and diverse cohort. While we would like
students to have some high school history and writing courses under their
belts, we gladly welcome any students you think are ready to benefit from
critical thinking, discussion about and practicing ahimsa (nonviolence) and
satyagraha (soul force) in their lives.
We will challenge students to understand more deeply the history of
nonviolence and the different types of violence and peace we see in our
daily lives and in global issues. They will have the opportunity to connect
with and partner with local nonviolence leaders and organizations carrying
out social or environmental activism. Students will carry out nonviolent
action projects of their own design, taking on a personal, community, or
global issue important to them.
