Spring is testing season at Berkeley High School. Up first is the
California Standardized Testing and Reporting or STAR, as it is known, takes
place in the mornings Tuesday April 23 through Friday April 26. Testing for
the IB classes and the Advanced Placement classes runs next from Thursday
May 2 through Monday May 20. Last year 800 students took 1,513 AP exams and
257 students took 793 IB exams. All three types of exams are graded by
outside organizations. That is what makes the test results and information
valuable-not only to measure individual student progress but to understand
our school's strengths and weaknesses.
The STAR test is given by each students' 2nd period teacher. The AP and IB
tests also have a paid administrator in charge of each test but they are
assisted by volunteer proctors-that is, the parents and guardians and
grandparents of Berkeley High students. In a separate email I will begin
the process of asking for help for the AP and IB tests. Meanwhile, below is
some important scheduling information for the STAR test.
1. On Tuesday April 23 and Wednesday April 24, 9th, 10th, and 11th students
will report directly to their 2nd period classes at 8:30 am; seniors will
report to school after lunch.
2. On Thursday April 25, all sophomores will report to their 2nd period
class at 8:30 am; 9th and 11th grade students taking science will report to
their 2nd period class at 10:30 am; all students (including seniors) report
to school at 1:30 pm.
3. On Friday April 26, 9th grade students report at noon; 10th and 11th
grade students report to their 2nd period class at 8:30 am; seniors report
to school at noon.
4. Afternoon schedule during STAR: All students will report to their 4,5,6
period classes after testing ends on Tuesday and Wednesday; all students
will report to their 2,3,1 period classes after testing on Thursday and
Friday.
If the above looks confusing, do not worry, your student will know when they
are to be at school.
