SENIORS

A few CSU's will continue to accept applications on a space available basis,
including CSU East Bay, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Dominguez Hills, and Cal

BHS Volunteer Essay Readers: Our generous volunteer essay readers have been
working tirelessly to support our seniors with their college

essays.  We thank all of you for your time and energy! Please note that our
essay readers will be available on Monday mornings and during the lunch
period every day in the College and Career Center.  They will no longer have
scheduled visits after school.

FINANCIAL AID:  We will have our Financial Aid "Cash For College" workshop
on January 23rd, at Berkeley High School.  At this workshop, seniors and
parents/guardians will receive hands-on support with completing financial
aid applications.  Please stay tuned for more information about this event.

*If you are planning on applying for financial aid, you and your parents
should sign up for a PIN# at www.fafsa.ed.gov.   You can plan on submitting
your FAFSA as soon after Jan. 1 as possible.

Applying to CSU's:  Following completion of your applications, be sure to
check the deadlines for EACH campus.  For instance, CSU test date deadlines
vary by each college, and campuses will have different deadlines for sending
in transcripts, taking EPT and ELM assessment tests, etc.  We recommend
applying to each CSU by Nov. 30th, and preferably by Nov. 29th.  "Impacted"
majors and CSU campuses that are "impacted" are often more selective and may
require higher GPAs and test scores for their selection criteria.  The 7 CSU
campuses that are NOT "impacted" are CSU East Bay, Bakersfield, Channel
Islands, Dominguez Hills, Monterey Bay, Maritime, and Stanislaus.  We
recommend considering applying to at least one "non-impacted" CSU campus.  

IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT IN YOUR TEST SCORES TO UC'S AND/OR CSU'S FROM
COLLEGEBOARD.ORG OR ACT.ORG, DO SO ASAP.

Sending Test Scores to UC's:   Remember, when sending test scores to UC's,
you only need to send them to ONE UC, and all other campuses

will then have access to your scores.

Sending Test Scores to CSU's:  SAT - List the CSUMentor institution code, so
that CSUMentor can store your scores for any CSU campus to retrieve.  The
CSUMentor institution code for the SAT is 3594.

ACT - If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you
can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to additional campuses.
Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for
your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. If you have not yet arranged for
your ACT scores to be sent to a CSU campus, you can learn how to request
this at www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html. 

CSU East Bay:  CSUEB offers a variety of academic programs, including highly
regarded business administration options and pre-professional programs in
medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary
science, allied health sciences, law and theology.  To learn more about this

SENIOR GRADES COUNT!  Whether you are applying to a private
college/university, CSU, UC, or out of state public school, senior year
grades count!  While you may be admitted to a college in the winter or early
in the spring, this is traditionally a preliminary admittance pending
receipt of your official senior year grades at the end of the year.  

New SAT and ACT registration procedures - photos required during
registration! To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all
students and prevent test-taker impersonation, starting this fall the
College Board (for SAT tests) and the ACT testing agency (for the ACT) will
require enhanced security measures for all students taking the college
entrance tests. Students will be required to submit a current, recognizable
head-and-shoulders photo that will be printed on the new photo admission

EOP:  What is Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)? The Educational
Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to improve access and retention of
historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. An EOP
student has the potential and demonstrated motivation to perform
satisfactorily at a CSU, but has not been able to realize this potential
because of economic or educational background. The program provides
admission and academic assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In
many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students.
Campuses tailor their programs to accommodate the needs of their student
population (CSUMentor.edu)

Who May Apply? Only historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged
undergraduate students who need admission assistance and support services to
succeed in college are admitted to EOP. They must demonstrate academic
potential and motivation, be California residents or otherwise eligible, and
meet the income criteria stated below. (CSUMentor.edu)

*COLLEGE VISIT:  LANEY COLLEGE - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE)
PROGRAMS - DEC. 13, 10:40 am in the CCC - Seniors interested in Laney
College and/or Career and Technical Education Programs will have an
opportunity to attend this presentation in the College and Career Center.  A
Laney College representative will highlight CTE Programs at Laney, including
Green Jobs, Welding, Industrial Maintenance, Architecture/Engineering,
Carpentry, Computer Information Systems, Construction Management, and
Environmental Control Technology. Seniors must obtain permission from your
3rd period teacher to attend this event.  

JUNIORS/SOPHOMORES

SCORES FOR NOV. 17TH MOCK ACT OR SAT:  For students who took the Nov. 17th
Mock ACT or SAT, your scores can be retrieved in the College and Career
Center any day during lunch or after school on Monday or Wednesday.  Please
note that the Nov. 17th Mock ACT or SAT was in no way affiliated with the
October PSAT. 

CAREER LOCKER:  Do you want to explore career opportunities and possible
majors for college?  Career Locker is a web-based program purchased for
Berkeley High School students for career and college exploration.  Students
can use Career Locker from any location that can access the internet.  This
program includes assessment tests, occupation and education search tools,
and practice questions for test preparation.  For information on how to set
up your Career Locker account, please see Ms. Price or Mr. Barton in the
College and Career Center.

*Sophomore College Panel Event:  On December 19, 2012, all BHS sophomores
will attend a panel discussion with BHS alumni who are currently enrolled in
college.  Students will attend this event with one of your classes, and you
will have the opportunity to ask questions and hear about the college
experiences of fellow Yellow Jackets.  This event is hosted and facilitated
by BHS Counselors and the College and Career Center.

SCHOLARSHIPS

* *Students Rising Above - For Current Juniors, C/O 2014: Students Rising
Above is looking for high school juniors who have demonstrated strength of
character in the face of challenging odds, and dream of a college education.
Selected students come from low-income households and are rising above
tremendous difficulties and succeeding in school and in life despite their
circumstances at home.  These difficulties include poverty, neglect,
violence, addiction and homelessness. Applicants are required to have a 3.0
GPA, and applications are due on April 4, 2013.  For more information,

eQuality Scholarship Collaborative:  The eQuality Scholarship Collaborative
awards scholarships to honor and encourage California students for their
service to the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community.  The criteria in
which scholarship recipients will be selected include:  Service to the LGBTQ
community, Leadership, Hardship or special circumstances, Academic
achievement. Applications, including transcripts and letters of
recommendation, must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2013.  Applications are

KP 2013 Scholarship Program:  The KP Asian Association Scholarships
recognize students who have brought demonstrable, tangible benefit to an

AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP:  The AXA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of
AXA Equitable, directing the company's philanthropic and volunteer
activities and working to improve the quality of life in communities across
the country.  This program distributes over $1.3 million per year in
scholarships.  Common qualities in scholarship winners include ambition and
drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and

E4FC - Educators for Fair Consideration - www.e4fc.org:   Visit this site

Bay Area immigrant students.

RON BROWN SCHOLAR PROGRAM:  To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens
or permanent residents, Black or African American and current high school
seniors at the time of application.  Applicants should demonstrate academic
achievement, exhibit leadership ability, participate in community service
activities and demonstrate financial need.  Applications are available in
the College and Career Center. Applications are due November 1st in order to
be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program and to have your application
materials forwarded to a select and limited number of additional colleges
and scholarship providers, or January 9th in order to be considered only for

THE GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM:  The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)
Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was
established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American
Indian/Alaska Native*, Asian Pacific Islander American**, and Hispanic
American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college
education in any discipline area of interest. Continuing Gates Millennium
Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the
following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering,
library science, mathematics, public health or science.  For more

CALIFORNIA STATE PTA:  The California State PTA offers graduating high
school senior scholarships in the amount of $500 to acknowledge the
achievements of high school seniors for outstanding volunteer service in
their school and community.  Last year, the California State PTA awarded 123
scholarships.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center,
and you can also visit www.capta.org   Applications are due Feb. 1, 2013.
