*SAT Word of the Week: Grandiose - impressive because of uncommon
largeness, scope, effect or grandeur.
She was full of grandiose ideas.
SENIORS
*FINANCIAL AID: We hope that those of you who attended our Financial Aid
presentation on Feb. 14th found it informative and helpful. We will have
our Financial Aid "Cash For College" workshop on January 23rd, at Berkeley
High School. At this workshop, seniors and parents/guardians will receive
hands-on support with completing financial aid applications. Please stay
tuned for more information about this event.
*The November 30 deadline for CSU and UC applications is approaching fast!
We have limited days at school before this deadline. Please consider
utilizing our after school application workshops on Tue/Thur. In addition,
students are welcome to utilize our drop in hours to work on essays and
applications.
*Applying to CSU's: Following completion of your applications, be sure to
check the deadlines for EACH campus. For instance, CSU test date deadlines
vary by each college, and campuses will have different deadlines for sending
in transcripts, taking EPT and ELM assessment tests, etc. We recommend
applying to each CSU by Nov. 30th, and preferably by Nov. 29th. "Impacted"
majors and CSU campuses that are "impacted" are often more selective and may
require higher GPAs and test scores for their selection criteria. The 7 CSU
campuses that are NOT "impacted" are CSU East Bay, Bakersfield, Channel
Islands, Dominguez Hills, Monterey Bay, Maritime, and Stanislaus. We
recommend considering applying to at least one "non-impacted" CSU campus.
*Applying to UC: Deadline = Nov. 30! We encourage all UC applicants to
apply to a range of UC's if you want a good chance at a place at a UC. UC
Merced can be a good fit for some students, and their selection criteria are
the least selective of all UC's. Remember, when sending test scores to UCs,
you only need to send them to ONE UC, and all other campuses will then have
access to your scores.
*The UC application offers an "additional comments" box in the Academic
section. Students may use this space as an opportunity to explain things
that are not expressed in other portions of the application. For instance,
students may wish to elaborate on non a-g courses taken, scheduling
conflicts, or courses taken outside of BHS. In addition, BHS students who
are in Learning Communities that focus on particular academic areas should
use this space to describe your Learning Community, including the area(s) of
focus and the course opportunities that were available to you. Students
should check with your guidance counselor and/or college advisor for details
on this process.
APPLICATION WORKSHOPS: College Advisors Angela Price and Skyler Barton are
hosting CSU and UC application workshops for all seniors on Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons, from 3:35 to 4:45 pm in the Library Computer Lab.
Seniors can attend these workshops and receive assistance with completing
your college applications. Workshops will continue through the month of
November.
CSU Glimpse - CSU Monterey Bay: CSUMB is a non-impacted campus that serves
roughly 5,600 undergraduate students. Students who are seeking hands-on
experiential learning opportunities may want to check out the opportunities
that CSUMB provides, including their popular Marine Science program. The
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) is a cross-campus center
that trains, supports, and engages students in undergraduate research.
Students who are interested in possibly joining this small yet diverse
campus community at CSUMB can learn more at http://csumb.edu/
CSU East Bay: CSUEB offers a variety of academic programs, including highly
regarded business administration options and pre-professional programs in
medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, veterinary
science, allied health sciences, law and theology. To learn more about this
non-impacted university, please visit http://www20.csueastbay.edu/
SENIOR GRADES COUNT! Whether you are applying to a private
college/university, CSU, UC, or out of state public school, senior year
grades count! While you may be admitted to a college in the winter or early
in the spring, this is traditionally a preliminary admittance pending
receipt of your official senior year grades at the end of the year.
College Essay Readers Available: We are fortunate to have this outstanding
support service available for our seniors this fall. The October-November
schedule for essay readers can be obtained at the front desk in the College
and Career Center. Essay readers will be available every day in the morning
and during the lunch period, and after school on M,T,W &Th.
Advising Appointments for Seniors:
Each Monday morning, Ms. Price and Mr. Barton will open up an additional
week of appointments for seniors to sign-up. The schedules fill up fast, so
we recommend coming before first period if you'd like to secure an
appointment time.
Seniors may also drop in any day at lunch or after school without an
appointment to have shorter questions answered. College Advisor assignments:
Ms. Price - BIHS and AC students with last names L-Z. Mr. Barton - AHA,
AMPS, CAS, GRN and AC students with last names A-K.
TESTING DEADLINE REMINDER: The December test dates are the last ones
accepted by the UC's and most CSU's for admission in the fall of 2013.
While most CSU's will accept the December test scores, a few of them will
not. If you have not yet done so, please check with your college advisor to
discuss your list of colleges and find out the potential deadlines for
testing. UC's will continue to accept the December test scores. While UC's
no longer require SAT Subject Test scores from applicants, some programs
"recommend" that you take them (e.g. engineering). Some other colleges
continue to require Subject Tests (check the admission requirements of the
colleges you are applying to).
New SAT and ACT registration procedures - photos required during
registration! To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all
students and prevent test-taker impersonation, starting this fall the
College Board (for SAT tests) and the ACT testing agency (for the ACT) will
require enhanced security measures for all students taking the college
entrance tests. Students will be required to submit a current, recognizable
head-and-shoulders photo that will be printed on the new photo admission
ticket. For more information, please visit www.collegeboard.org or
www.act.org.
ACT (Register at www.ACT.org) Test Date: December 8, 2012 Registration
Deadline: November 9, 2012 Late Fee Required: November 10-16, 2012
SAT (Register at www.collegeboard.org) Test Date: November 3, 2012 Test
Date: December 1, 2012 Late Registration Deadline: Nov. 16
SENDING TEST SCORES TO CSU CAMPUSES: SAT - Once you have taken the SAT test,
you should list the CSUMentor institution code, so that CSUMentor can store
your scores for any CSU campus to retrieve. The CSUMentor institution code
for the SAT is 3594.
ACT - If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you
can use the ACT Scores Manager to release your score to additional campuses.
Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for
your scores to be sent to a CSU campus. If you have not yet arranged for
your ACT scores to be sent to a CSU campus, you can learn how to request
this at www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html.
*1st GENERATION TO COLLEGE - SENIOR MEETING - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 6TH
PERIOD, IN THE COLLEGE/CAREER CENTER:
Are you a first-generation to college bound student? We have designed a
series of workshops to help support you through the college application
process. At our first meeting, we discussed college applications, SAT and
ACT testing and sending official scores to colleges, and the Educational
Opportunity Program (EOP) requirements and application process. At our next
meeting (Nov. 20), our primary focus will be assisting students with EOP
applications.
To attend this meeting, you will need to obtain permission from your 6th
period teacher, and your absence will be excused. You can use your college
presentation permission slip, or come to the CCC if you do not have one.
EOP: What is Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)? The Educational
Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to improve access and retention of
historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. An EOP
student has the potential and demonstrated motivation to perform
satisfactorily at a CSU, but has not been able to realize this potential
because of economic or educational background. The program provides
admission and academic assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In
many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students.
Campuses tailor their programs to accommodate the needs of their student
population (CSUMentor.edu)
Who May Apply? Only historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged
undergraduate students who need admission assistance and support services to
succeed in college are admitted to EOP. They must demonstrate academic
potential and motivation, be California residents or otherwise eligible, and
meet the income criteria stated below. (CSUMentor.edu)
For additional information about EOP, please visit:
http://www.csumentor.edu/finaid/steps/eop.asp
If you are planning on applying to EOP and would like to receive assistance
with your application, please visit your College Advisor (Ms. Price or Mr.
Barton) for support.
