ADMINISTRATION

 

1. The PSAT will be offered at Berkeley High on Saturday, Oct. 20. This is a
test for juniors and sophomores which serves as a practice for the SAT.
Juniors with high scores may qualify for National Merit Scholarships.
Sign-ups for Juniors will begin next Monday, Sept. 24 and will continue
through Sept. 28 at the Donahue Gym ticket windows during lunch to 12:10 and
after school to 4 p.m. The registration fee is $22. Payment may be made in
cash or by check or money order payable to Berkeley High School. Sophomores
will sign up the following week, Oct. 1-5, same time, place and price.

 

2. JAMRS opt out forms and Military Waivers are available in the front
office and should be returned by September 26th.  JAMRS or Joint Advertising
and Market Research Studies is a database funded by the Department of
Defense and used for Military recruiting purposes.  If you do not want your
personal information sold to the Military fill out a JAMRS opt out form.  If
you are a junior or a senior and do not want Berkeley High School to give
contact information to the military as required by law please out a Military
Waiver.  Remember both forms are due September 26th.

 

3. Phil's Sliders is happy to announce our new Berkeley High Special. All
Berkeley High students and faculty get 10% off your entire order.  Offer is
available Monday-Friday, all day. Come on by for our delicious sliders,
tots, milkshakes and dessert. We are at 2024 Shattuck Ave.

 

 

CLUBS

 

1. ITPs and Vagina Monologues - informational meeting, on Thursday,
September 27th.  Come find out what we're all about at lunch in Mr. Winer's
room in A204.

 

*2. Are you interested in producing comedy skits ?  Come to Mr. Diab's room
in G207 next  Friday (September 28th) at lunch for an informational meeting.
Join the Comedy production club!.

 

3. If you like Skiing and/or snowboarding then Go Ahead Shred is the club
for you.  Our goal is to take students within the club to Lake Tahoe on a
private bus to Ski and Snowboard for one day with their friends.  If you're
interested, please come to our first meeting on Tuesday, October 9th in room
C224 during lunch.  We hope to see you there.

 

 

LEADERSHIP - RALLY

 

*1. Leadership is holding auditions for a chance to perform in the rally on
September 27 in the community theater.  3:45-5:00pm.  Please sign up with
Mr. V in the leadership office.  The rally is coming soon!

                                     

2. Homecoming week is October 15-19th!  Homecoming rally is Friday, October
19th.

 

 

*COLLEGE VISITS

Many college representatives visit Berkeley High's College and Career Center
every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of these meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class you are missing.  Sign up in advance
in the College and Career and pick up a permission slip.  The schedule of
presentations will be updated throughout the fall, so please check our
calendar frequently.  The complete September and October calendar will be

TEEN SERVICES

 

Video Workshop for high school students: Make your own (very) short film in
this 2-part video workshop.  Whether you are experienced, or just curious,
come learn the filmmaker's process - from conception to production to
post-production. Participants will see examples of short films, develop an
idea, write a script, shoot the film, and then edit the film. At the end of
the workshop we'll discuss the finished pieces. This 2-part video workshop
takes place in the 3rd floor community meeting room at the Central Library
in downtown Berkeley. The 2 sessions will run 4pm - 7pm on Monday, September
24 and Tuesday, September 25, 2012. All equipment provided. All skill levels
welcome. FREE. Open to all high school students. For more information call

JOBS/VOLUNTEERING

 

*1. Willard Mathworks needs you!  Receive tutoring community service credit
for tutoring middle school students on Tuesdays 4-5pm.  Starting Tuesday,
October 2nd.

 

2. King's ESL after school tutorial is looking for an upperclassman/woman
who wants to tutor students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade in all subjects.  We
prefer Spanish-bilingual students but are open to others who are caring,
kind and patient, and have skills.  Pay is $9.00/hr.  Please call Ms.
Rathwell @ 644-4811 or email her at pattyrathwell at berkeley.net if you're
interested.  Tutorial runs from 3-4pm three days a week and 2:15-3:15pm once
a week.

 

3. The City of Berkeley's YouthWorks Employment Program in the Department of
Health, Housing & Community Services, is pleased to announce that the
application period for the Winter After School Youth Employment Program
begins on Oct 1st and continues until Nov 1st.

 

Qualified Youth (14-25 years old & Berkeley residents ) are eligible to
apply for jobs in a variety of sectors, including childcare, recreation &
clerical positions within city departments and various community
organizations.  The pay is $8.00/hr, and Youth may work up to 15 hrs/week
for a period of up to 7 weeks.  The tentative employment start date is
December 10th, 2012.

 

To apply: Youth need to come in person to the YouthWorks office at 2180
Milvia St. (City Hall) starting Oct 1st, to sign in and pick up an
application packet.  The completed application must be turned in with
required original documents including Photo ID, Social Security Card, Proof
of Residence, a typed or word-processed resume, and Parental Authorization
for youth under the age of 18.  The deadline for returning the application &
required documents is Thursday, Nov 1st, 2012.

 

Please note the offices will be closed on Oct. 12th and 26th as part of the
city's continuing cost-saving measures.

For youth requiring assistance with resumes, YouthWorks will be offering two
resume workshops: Wednesday, Sept 26th, Oct. 10th, from 4:00-5:30pm at the
Berkeley Public Library, Central Branch (2090 Kittredge St) in the 3rd floor
electronic classroom. Preregistration is required; please contact YouthWorks
to register and to pick up a resume worksheet. Participants in the workshop
will complete a professional resume ready for submission to the program.
