ATTENTION SENIORS

SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30 pm in the BHS Library – Senior Parent College Information Night – the how-to’s of applying. 

Senior Profile:  Due no later than Monday, Sep. 10 at 4 pm, in the College and Career Center (D-221).  This form is only for students applying to private schools requiring a counselor recommendation.  (The UCs and Cal States don’t require recommendations.)

College Essay Readers Available:  Starting September 10, there will be a college essay reader in the College/Career Center during lunch. 

College Advisor’s Class Presentations:  Throughout the week of September 10, Ms. Price and Mr. Barton will be conducting class presentations to cover important aspects of the college application process.  Students will all receive an important folder, complete with important information regarding the fall semester and the college application process.  In addition, students will receive a College Application Workbook for Seniors. 

Advising Appointments for Seniors

Sign-up sheets will become available in D-221 on the morning of September 17th.  Seniors may also drop in any day at lunch or after school without an appointment to have shorter questions answered.  College Advisor assignments:  Ms. Price – BIHS and AC students with last names L-Z.  Mr. Barton – AHA, AMPS, CAS, GRN and AC students with last names A-K.

Information Session for Students and Parents (all grades welcome).  Sunday, September 9, 2:00-4:00 PM.  Florence Schwimley Little Theater and the BHS Library.  Hear a brief history of the Sister schools and learn about their strengths in sciences, opportunities for internships, leadership, outcomes, and social life. COLLEGE VISITS

Many college representatives visit Berkeley High’s College and Career Center every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of these meetings, with the permission of the teacher whose class you are missing.  Sign up in advance in the College and Career and pick up a permission slip. The first week of presentations (Sep. 10 – 14) will take place before school or during lunch, so no permission slips will be necessary.

*New SAT and ACT registration procedures - photos required during registration!

To produce an honest and fair test-taking environment for all students and prevent test-taker impersonation, starting this fall the College Board (for SAT tests) and the ACT testing agency (for the ACT) will require enhanced security measures for all students taking the college entrance tests. Students will be required to submit a current, recognizable head-and-shoulders photo that will be printed on the new photo admission ticket. *FREE SAT AND ACT PREP CLASSES (SENIORS ONLY FOR THE FALL SEMESTER):

SAT Prep Class – Begins on Tuesday, September 11 in D220.  The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:40 – 5:40 pm.  Students must register in advance in the College/Career Center (D221).  Students can register before school, during lunch or after school. Limited space is available.

ACT Prep Class – Begins on Monday, September 10 in D220.  The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:40 – 5:40 pm.  Students must register in advance in the College/Career Center (D221).  Students can register before school, during lunch or after school.  Limited space is available.

*TAKE AN ACT / SAT PRACTICE TEST AT BHS (HOSTED BY THE PRINCETON REVIEW) - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 - 9:00-1:15 - Pick up a flyer and register in the College and Career Center before school, during lunch, or after school.  Seniors will be given priority during the registration process, but we will open up registration for juniors on Thursday, September 20, if space is available.  An announcement will go out to the BHS etree on Wednesday, September 19, with updated information.

SCHOLARSHIPS

SINKLER MILLER MEDICAL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP – Open to seniors who are SF Bay Area residents, minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate financial need and plan to attend a two or four year college in the fall.  Deadline is Oct. 8 and applications are available in D-221.

DOWNTOWN BERKELEY YMCA HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (For grades 9-12)
The YMCA High School internship program helps teens who need an internship, are looking for work experience, or planning to find a job, build the skills necessary to find work and become a strong asset to their employer.  Participants can pick up an application at the Downtown Berkeley YMCA and must turn it in by September 20, 2012.
