ATTENTION SENIORS

*We have entered the time of year where many of you are hearing back from colleges. We congratulate you for receiving acceptance to colleges, and also encourage you to keep things in perspective when receiving “sorry” notices. In addition, we hope that you continue to be supportive of one another and remain considerate of your peers. 

*You will need to file a Statement of Intent to Register to the college you select to attend by May 1st. Consider important factors and prepare to make this decision. If you would like assistance with this process, please come see us in the College/Career Center during drop-in hours.

GAP YEAR: If you are interested in information about GAP YEAR programs, please come see Mr. Barton or Ms. Price in the College and Career Center.

CSU APPLICANTS:   It is important to check your CSU accounts frequently for updates on your admission status.  Some CSU’s will ask students to forward an official transcript right away.  It is important that you follow all of the instructions. CSU applicants must also send official test scores from College Board or ACT.  

If accepted to any Cal State University, CSU requires you to take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM) before you enroll.  You are exempt from the EPT (English assessment) if your SAT Critical Reading score is a 500 or above, if your ACT English score is 22 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the AP Language and Composition or the AP Literature and Composition test.  You are exempt from the ELM (math assessment) test if your SAT math reasoning test score or SAT Subject Test in Mathematics score is 550 or above, if your ACT Mathematics Test score is 23 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam. 

ATTENTION JUNIORS 

*On Monday, March 19th, Ms. Price and Mr. Barton will open up the second round of sign ups for individual college planning appointments with juniors. The College/Career Center will be open to students at 8:00 a.m., and we encourage you to come reserve your spot as early as possible.
We hope that you have found our class presentations informative and beneficial.  Please remember to review the information in your folder. If you missed our presentation and have not received a folder, please see Ms. Price or Mr. Barton in the College and Career Center during lunch or after school. 
Juniors will all be receiving a Berkeley High School College Application Workbook soon.  This is another reference and great source of information for you to utilize.  These workbooks will be distributed in one of your classes during the week of March 19th.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES:

UC Davis Young Scholars Program (UCD – YSP): This program strives to engage 40 academically talented high school sophomores and juniors in a variety of research experiences within the areas of biological and natural sciences.  Each student will undertake a six-week, long-term, apprentice-level research project in a university laboratory under the mentorship of university researchers. For more information, please visit. Applications are due by March 31, 2012.

Columbia University Summer High School Programs: Offering rigorous summer pre-college programs for students entering grades 9-12 and freshman year of college. Locations include New York City, Barcelona, and the Middle East. These programs offer students the opportunity to experience college life, meet other highly motivated students from all over the world, broaden your world view and earn an official Colombia University Statement of Attendance. Junior State of America (JSA): This summer school program offers college‐level classes which develop critical thinking, debate and team‐building skills. Three and four week programs are offered at Stanford, Princeton, and Georgetown Universities, as well as an international experience in Beijing, China. Dates and subject matter vary by location. The University of British Columbia's Summer Scholars Program: This is a 14-day course of study in which you will study with UBC professors, learn about environmental science and sustainability, and live on campus while exploring one of Canada's scenic regions. The program is from July 15 - July 28, 2012.  The program is open to all international students between 16 and 18 years of age, entering one of their final two years of high school. New York University Precollege Summer Programs: For rising high school juniors and seniors, this is your opportunity to explore NYU and college life in New York City.  NYU Precollege offers the opportunity to earn college credit by taking courses at NYU, attend college-planning sessions and a Summer College Fair, and live in on-campus housing during this six-week program (July 2 - August 10). Maryland Institute College of Art Summer Pre-College: MICA is offering the opportunity to experience rewarding opportunities for young artists and designers this summer. GirlVentures Summer Outdoor Adventure Programs: Ever want to sleep under the stars?  Rock climb outside?  Kayak on the ocean?  Shout from the top of the highest peak around?  GirlVentures offers Summer Outdoor Adventure Program for girls in high school.  For more information and to apply online, visit www.girlventures.org The first round deadline is March 16, 2012.  

AFS, the Intercultural Exchange Organization: This program is accepting applications right now for summer, semester and a full year study abroad trips for high school and Gap Year students as well as for local families interested in hosting a foreign student. Full scholarships are available for selected countries. See www.afs.org for further information.

USC Summer Programs (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors): Offers students a preview of “freshman year” through its college immersion program.  Students explore Los Angeles as a laboratory for recreational and cultural learning beyond the traditional classroom.  Programs are designed to combine college level coursework, academic field trips, and structured recreational activities. Colorado College Summer Session High School Program for Rising Seniors (current Juniors):  Earn college credit and find out if Colorado College and the Block Plan are right for you.  In addition to coursework, students will have a chance to participate in the Summer Outdoor Adventure Program.   You may visit www.ColoradoCollege.edu/precollege for more information.

Oxbridge Academic Programs:  Experience the learning environment in Oxford and Cambridge in England, Barcelona in Spain, Paris and Montpellier in France, and New York City in the U.S.  They offer over 160 different courses to choose from. SCHOLARSHIPS:

For a more extensive list of scholarships go to the BHS College and Career Center website or come to the College and Career Center and pick up a hard copy!  Remember to frequently check in at the College and Career Center for updated information on scholarships.  

*Berkeley Rotary Club: Berkeley Rotary offers 4-year scholarships to deserving students who otherwise might not be able to attend college. The program is based on need, as well as scholastic ability, community involvement and potential. Competitive scholarships are renewed annually based on academic performance.  Applications are available in the College/Career Center and can also be downloaded from BerkeleyRotary.org/scholarships. Applications are due on April 10, 2012.

Quest Bridge College Prep Scholarship for Juniors:  This program provides opportunities designed to help outstanding low-income high school juniors prepare to apply to top colleges.  Submission of one College Prep Scholarship application makes a student eligible for several awards, including; full scholarships to college summer programs, college admissions conference invitations and all-expense-paid college visits.  For more information and to apply online, visit www.questbridge.org  Applications are due March 27, 2012.

Kiwanis Club of Berkeley Scholarship:  The Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation offers scholarships to graduating seniors.  Applications and recommendation forms are available in the College and Career Center, and the deadline for submission of the scholarship application and all related materials is March 23, 2012.

Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority Scholarship Fund:  This Scholarship Fund was created to award Chicana/Latina women with the same dedication to academics and our community as the sisters of Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority.  The top two (2) applicants will receive a scholarship of $500 each and the next ten (10) runner-up applicants will receive a scholarship of $300 each. U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is NOT a requirement.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center, and applications are due on April 3, 2012.

The Bay Area Gardener’s Foundation: is a non-profit organization committed to provide financial support to eligible economically disadvantaged students to attend college. The goal of the foundation is to provide the means for students to achieve a higher education, which will prepare them to be competitive and contributing members of their community and economy. This foundation offers multiple scholarships. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and be willing to do twenty five hours or more of community service at a Non-profit organization. Banatao Family Filipino American Education Fund College Scholarship:  Eligibility criteria incudes:  Incoming freshman enrolled full-time at an accredited four year-college or university in 2012-13, minimum GPA: 3.0, career focus in engineering, physical or biological sciences (excluding healthcare), Filipino heritage (at least 50%) and demonstrated financial need. Cruzando Fronteras/Ayudando a la Comunidad: This scholarship for High school seniors
Awards 2 scholarships of $500 each. Eligibility includes: Undocumented student with a min. 2.5
GPA and proof of commitment to community service.  For more information, please visit http://www.csus.edu/org/mecha Applications are due March 17, 2012.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc Scholarships:  These scholarships offer financial support to African-American high school seniors who plan to attend a four year university or college.  Eligibility requirements include a minimum GPA of 2.5 and active involvement in community service initiatives.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center (D221).  The deadline for applications is April 1, 2012.

Wa Sung Community Service Club Scholarships:  There will be numerous $1,000 scholarships awarded through this service club.  Applicants must be a graduating high school senior of Asian descent, currently attending school in Alameda County or Contra Costa County.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center (D221).  The deadline for applications is April 2, 2012.

Ann & Jon Reynolds Scholarship Awards (Seniors):  These scholarships will be awarded to the successful applicants at $3,000 per year.  Two awardees will be selected.  The eligibility criteria includes a record of community service involvement, a minimum GPA of 3.0, native born U.S. citizen, and submission of a Student Aid Report Summary from Federal Student Aid Program.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center.  Application deadline is April 30, 2012.

Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship (for Seniors):   The Berkeley Community Fund provides 4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically talented and resilient Berkeley High School students.  Students can receive more information and applications for this scholarship in the College and Career Center (see Mr. Barton or Ms. Price). 

Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West Scholarship Grant Program:  This scholarship program is open to financially disadvantaged students who wish to further pursue their post secondary education, of an academic or vocational nature.   The Don and Roy Charitable Foundation West offers a scholarship grant of up to $1,000 to eligible students who demonstrate significant dedication to their school, family and community.  Students who live independently or whose parent(s) /guardian(s) struggle financially are encouraged to apply. CASCWA Scholarship:  California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance, awards $500 scholarships to deserving, graduating high school seniors who have overcome unique obstacles and difficulties.  Applications are available in the College and Career Center, and the deadline for submitting applications is April 6, 2012.

2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship:  Scholarship applications are now available for the 2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship, sponsored by the Rho Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  Scholarships will be awarded based on need and academic achievement.  Eligible recipients must be a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, be African/African American, be a high school senior, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above, be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year college in Fall 2012 and show recent community involvement. Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship:  One of the programs of the Italian Catholic Federation is to offer college scholarships to further the education of students who achieve a total cumulative GPA (3.5 years) of at least 3.2 and meet one of the following:  (1) Are Roman Catholic and of Italian Descent and live within the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Arizona, California, Illinois and Nevada, only where branches of the Federation are established.  Or, (2) Are Roman Catholic but need not be of Italian Descent or live where Branches of the Federation are established if either Roman Catholic parent, guardian or grandparent is a member of the “Italian Catholic Federation.”  Applications can be picked up at the College and Career Center (D221).  Application deadline is March 15, 2012.

UC Applicants:  You should research the University’s scholarship opportunities, including those associated with individual campuses.  While many scholarships are automatic and awarded on the basis of information that you provided in the application for admission, some scholarships require supplemental applications or other documentation.
