Communicating with our Teens about Alcohol and Marijuana is the focus of the
Spring 2012 BHS Parent Support Program - an Initiative of the BHS Safety
Committee - Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Committee.

Tuesdays from 6:45-8:30pm in the BHS Parent Resource Center. Starts Tuesday
March 20, 2012. Drop-in basis. Donation $10-20 suggested.

We all want to help our teens make healthy choices about alcohol and
marijuana. Research shows parents have great influence on the decisions and
that talking openly and often about drugs is extremely important.

. But when is the right time?

. What are the right words?

. Can I make things worse if it doesn't go well?

Truth is - we've loved our teens from the beginning. We are perfectly
positioned to be their support, except when we're upset by their choices or
our own beliefs are unclear. This ongoing parent support program will help
parents listen effectively, communicate honestly, and assist teens make good
decisions about drugs.

Annie Tyson and Karen Hughes are the program facilitators. Annie has been
leading Hand in Hand parent education and support programs for over 15
years. Karen is an alcohol prevention specialist at the UC Berkeley Health
Service. As former and current Berkeley High parents, they are dedicated to
empowering parents to meet the challenges we face in our community.
