ATTENTION SENIORS

FINANCIAL AID DEADLINE IS APPROACHING!   

*The deadline to file the FAFSA to apply for financial aid for all
California Community Colleges, UC and Cal State campuses is March 2nd!

*Financial Aid Workshops:  We are hosting additional FAFSA workshops for
students on the following dates: 

Monday, February 27, 3:30pm.

Tuesday, February 28, 3:30pm.

Wednesday, February 29, 3:30pm.

Come sign up in the College and Career Center to reserve your spot!

If you applied to any private colleges or universities, be sure to check
each college's financial aid website for the specific requirements and due
dates!  Remember that colleges have different due dates for financial aid
materials.  If you would like assistance, come see Ms. Price or Mr. Barton
in the College and Career Center after school or during lunch.

You can complete the Free Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA) online
at www.fafsa.ed.gov <http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/> .  Also, remember that some
colleges require the CSS/PROFILE.  For information on the PROFILE, you can
visit www.CollegeBoard.com <http://www.collegeboard.com/> .  

*Community College Workshops:  We hope that the community college workshops
have been helpful.   We will continue to provide assistance with the
community college application process throughout the next couple of weeks.
Come sign up in the College and Career Center to reserve your spot at an
upcoming workshop!   

UC APPLICANTS:

You should research the University's scholarship opportunities, including
those associated with individual campuses.  While many scholarships are
automatic and awarded on the basis of information that you provided in the
application for admission, some scholarships require supplemental
applications or other documentation.   For more information, please visit

CSU APPLICANTS:   It is important to check your CSU accounts frequently for
updates on your admission status.  Some CSU's will ask students to forward
an official transcript right away.  It is important that you follow all of
the instructions.   CSU applicants must also send official test scores from
College Board or ACT.  

If accepted to any Cal State University, CSU requires you to take the
English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry-Level Mathematics Test (ELM)
before you enroll.  You are exempt from the EPT (English assessment) if your
SAT Critical Reading score is a 500 or above, if your ACT English score is
22 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the AP Language and
Composition or the AP Literature and Composition test.  You are exempt from
the ELM (math assessment) test if your SAT math reasoning test score or SAT
Subject Test in Mathematics score is 550 or above, if your ACT Mathematics
Test score is 23 or above or you have a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP
Statistics, AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam.  

SENDING SAT AND/OR ACT TEST SCORES: Double-check to confirm that you've sent
your ACT and SAT to all of the colleges you applied to. 

 

ATTENTION JUNIORS

.       JUNIORS -Beginning the week of February 27th, your college advisors
will be hosting presentations for all juniors.  You will be notified by your
English teacher of the date your class will be attending one of these
presentations .  Beginning the week of March 5th, juniors can come to the
College and Career Center to sign-up for an appointment to meet with your
college advisor.

.       PARENTS OF JUNIORS:  We will be hosting an evening presentation for
parents and guardians of juniors on Thursday, March 8, at 6:30pm in the BHS
Library.  

.       ATTENTION BHS JUNIORS - FREE ACT Prep Courses offered at Berkeley
High School, sponsored by the People's Test Preparation Service (PTPS):  

.       PTPS is offering a free ACT prep course at Berkeley High School.
This course is designated for BHS juniors, and there are still a few seats
available.  The next session will take place on Wednesday, February 29, at
3:35pm.  The course will meet every Wednesday, from 3:35 to 5:30pm, for a
total of 10 weeks.  Students can sign up for this class in the College and
Career Center with Ms. Price or Mr. Barton - limited space is available.

JUNIORS & SOPHOMORES

Sophomores:  If you took the PSAT in October and have not received your
score reports yet, please see Ms. Price or Mr. Barton as soon as possible.  

Mock SAT Test:  The YMCA-PG&E Teen Center is hosting a free practice SAT
test on Saturday, February 25, from 8:30am-1:00pm.  Register at

YMCA-PG&E Teen Center SAT 101:  Students and families are invited to join
this workshop to receive information regarding the exam as well as general
strategies and tips.  The workshop takes place on Saturday, March 3, from

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES:

*The University of British Columbia's Summer Scholars Program:  This is a
14-day course of study in which you will study with UBC professors, learn
about environmental science and sustainability, and live on campus while
exploring one of Canada's scenic regions. The program is from July 15 - July
28, 2012.  The program is open to all international students between 16 and
18 years of age, entering one of their final two years of high school.  To

*New York University Precollege Summer Programs:  For rising high school
juniors and seniors, this is your opportunity to explore NYU and college
life in New York City.  NYU Precollege offers the opportunity to earn
college credit by taking courses at NYU, attend college-planning sessions
and a Summer College Fair, and live in on-campus housing during this
six-week program (July 2 - August 10).  For more information, please visit

*Maryland Institute College of Art Summer Pre-College:  MICA is offering the
opportunity to experience rewarding opportunities for young artists and

The Academic Talent Development Group (Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors):
ATDP offers challenging and enriching summer courses for students who are
passionate about and dedicated to learning.  This program is held on the UC

GirlVentures Summer Outdoor Adventure Programs:  Ever want to sleep under
the stars?  Rock climb outside?  Kayak on the ocean?  Shout from the top of
the highest peak around?  GirlVentures offers Summer Outdoor Adventure
Program for girls in high school.  For more information and to apply online,

AFS, the Intercultural Exchange Organization, is accepting applications
right now for summer, semester and a full year study abroad trips for high
school and Gap Year students as well as for local families interested in

The Arthritis Summer Science Internship Program:  This program places
outstanding high school students in the world renowned Rheumatology and
Immunology Laboratories at Stanford University and the University of
California, San Francisco.  This internship program is designed to encourage
students to pursue a career in scientific study and research with an
ultimate goal of inspiring them to focus their research potential on

USC Summer Programs (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors):  Offers students a
preview of "freshman year" through its college immersion program.  Students
explore Los Angeles as a laboratory for recreational and cultural learning
beyond the traditional classroom.  Programs are designed to combine college
level coursework, academic field trips, and structured recreational

Colorado College Summer Session High School Program for Rising Seniors
(current Juniors):  Earn college credit and find out if Colorado College and
the Block Plan are right for you.  In addition to coursework, students will
have a chance to participate in the Summer Outdoor Adventure Program.   You

Oxbridge Academic Programs:  Experience the learning environment in Oxford
and Cambridge in England, Barcelona in Spain, Paris and Montpellier in
France, and New York City in the U.S.  They offer over 160 different courses

SCHOLARSHIPS:

For a more extensive list of scholarships go to the BHS College and Career
Center website or come to the College and Career Center and pick up a hard
copy!  Remember to frequently check in at the College and Career Center for
updated information on scholarships.  

*Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc Scholarships:  These scholarships offer
financial support to African-American high school seniors who plan to attend
a four year university or college.  Eligibility requirements include a
minimum GPA of 2.5 and active involvement in community service initiatives.
Applications are available in the College and Career Center (D221).  The
deadline for applications is April 1, 2012.

 

*Wa Sung Community Service Club Scholarships:  There will be numerous $1,000
scholarships awarded through this service club.  Applicants must be a
graduating high school senior of Asian descent, currently attending school
in Alameda County or Contra Costa County.  Applications are available in the
College and Career Center (D221).  The deadline for applications is April 2,
2012.

 

*Chinese American Citizens Alliance 2012 National Essay Contest:  This
contest is open to any student enrolled in high school (grades 9-12).  No
entry fee is required.  Each essay will be judged on the basis of
originality, clarity of thought and expression.  All entry forms must be
completed no later than February 28.  Entry forms are available in the
College and Career Center.  

The contest date and location: Saturday, March 3, 2012, commencing at 10:00
a.m. and concluding at 12:00 p.m. Oakland Lodge, 303 Eighth Street, Oakland.

 

The Morris C. and Juliet James Achievement Fund:  This fund is the major
fund-raising project of the Berkeley Retired Teachers Association, awarding
money to high-achieving graduating Berkeley High seniors.  To be eligible,
you must have attended Berkeley schools for the majority of your public
school education.  Come to the College and Career Center to receive an
application.  Applications are due by noon on February 27th.  

Quest Bridge College Prep Scholarship for Juniors:  This program provides
opportunities designed to help outstanding low-income high school juniors
prepare to apply to top colleges.  Submission of one College Prep
Scholarship application makes a student eligible for several awards,
including; full scholarships to college summer programs, college admissions
conference invitations and all-expense-paid college visits.  For more

Ann & Jon Reynolds Scholarship Awards (Seniors):  These scholarships will be
awarded to the successful applicants at $3,000 per year.  Two awardees will
be selected.  The eligibility criteria includes a record of community
service involvement, a minimum GPA of 3.0, native born U.S. citizen, and
submission of a Student Aid Report Summary from Federal Student Aid Program.
Applications are available in the College and Career Center.  Application
deadline is April 30, 2012.

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program: The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program
wants to reward students who have succeeded both inside and outside of the
classroom - and who may not be able to attend college without financial
assistance.  1,000 students will receive one-time awards of $2,000.  For

Berkeley Community Fund Scholarship (for Seniors):  The Berkeley Community
Fund provides 4-year scholarships and mentoring support for academically
talented and resilient Berkeley High School students.  Students can receive
more information and applications for this scholarship in the College and
Career Center (see Mr. Barton or Ms. Price). 

Don and Roy Splawn Charitable Foundation West Scholarship Grant Program:
This scholarship program is open to financially disadvantaged students who
wish to further pursue their post-secondary education, of an academic or
vocational nature.   The Don and Roy Charitable Foundation West offers a
scholarship grant of up to $1,000 to eligible students who demonstrate
significant dedication to their school, family and community.  Students who
live independently or whose parent(s) /guardian(s) struggle financially are
encouraged to apply.  To apply, visit

Community NETwork (for Seniors):  The Community NETwork awards scholarships
to African American high school seniors.  The eligibility requirements
include; academic good standing (GPA minimum 2.5), African American senior,
intention to enroll in a four-year or two-year college or university.
Applications are available in the College and Career Center, and the
deadline for submitting applications is March 3, 2012.

CASCWA Scholarship:  California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare
and Attendance, awards $500 scholarships to deserving, graduating high
school seniors who have overcome unique obstacles and difficulties.
Applications are available in the College and Career Center, and the
deadline for submitting applications is April 6, 2012.

Kiwanis Club of Berkeley Scholarship:  The Berkeley Kiwanis Foundation
offers scholarships to graduating seniors.  Applications and recommendation
forms are available in the College and Career Center, and the deadline for
submission of the scholarship application and all related materials is March
23, 2012.

California Teachers Association Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Fund:  Criteria for eligibility for this scholarship include (one of the
following):  an "active" member of CTA, a dependent child of an "active",
retired, or deceased member of CTA, an "active" member of Student CTA.
This scholarship also requires membership of one of an ethnic minority group
(as defined on the application). Applications are available in the College
and Career Center, and the deadline for submission of the application and
all related materials is February 24, 2012.

2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship:  Scholarship applications are
now available for the 2012 Ivy and Pearls Foundation Scholarship, sponsored
by the Rho Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Scholarships will be awarded based on need and academic achievement.
Eligible recipients must be a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, be
African/African American, be a high school senior, have a cumulative GPA of
2.5 or above, be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year
college in Fall 2012 and show recent community involvement.  Applications

Mount Saint Mary's College Music Scholarship:  The Music Department at Mount
Saint Mary's College has announced the following Music Scholarship Audition
dates:  February 25 and March 18.  Audition requirements include an
application form with a short description of your musical background and
performance of two (2) compositions representing different periods of music.

Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship:  One of the programs of the Italian
Catholic Federation is to offer college scholarships to further the
education of students who achieve a total cumulative GPA (3.5 years) of at
least 3.2 and meet one of the following:  (1) Are Roman Catholic and of
Italian Descent and live within the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Arizona,
California, Illinois and Nevada, only where branches of the Federation are
established.  Or, (2) Are Roman Catholic but need not be of Italian Descent
or live where Branches of the Federation are established if either Roman
Catholic parent, guardian or grandparent is a member of the "Italian
Catholic Federation."  Applications can be picked up at the College and
Career Center (D221).  Application deadline is March 15, 2012.
