A number of Berkeley High students ride their bikes to school using the bike racks in the courtyard to secure their bikes during class. Alameda County also provides safe parking at the Berkeley Bike Station at 2208 Shattuck Avenue.

Riding your bike to school is good, HOWEVER, please remember, California State law requires all riders under 18 wear a helmet.
(Section 21212 of the vehicle code http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21212.htm )

The law covers, bikes, scooter, and skateboards, etc. If a rider is stopped without a helmet, parents are liable: "The parent or legal guardian having control or custody of an unemancipated minor whose conduct violates this section shall be jointly and severally liable with the minor for the amount of the fine imposed pursuant to this subdivision. "

The reason the law requires a helmet is because it is not safe to ride without one. The law also requires helmets while riding a scooter, and skateboards. Please pass this important information on to your student.
