Dear BHS Families and Staff:

At approximately 3:25 this afternoon, just before dismissal, our Campus
Monitor at the A Gate (Milvia and Allston) observed police activity in
Civic Center Park.

Our current understanding is that a drug deal was interrupted by an officer
from the Berkeley Police Department and that both subjects involved
attempted to flee the scene.

Preliminarily, what we understand is that one subject, an adult male, threw
an object under a car parked behind the city building at the southeast
corner of the park as he attempted to flee.

Students and citizens observing the activity believed it was a firearm and
notified BPD officers on the scene. A replica firearm was soon recovered by
officers from underneath the vehicle and that adult male (not a BHS
student) was taken in to custody.

Concurrently, our Campus Monitor alerted administrators and safety officers
as these events transpired and we temporarily closed our perimeter,
restricting any entry to the campus for approximately 5 minutes. We did not
activate a full campus lockdown as the incident appeared to be well
contained by officers on the scene; however, the restricted perimeter was
initiated as a precautionary measure until I could personally confer with
officers on the scene.

The incident is still being investigated and we are attempting to determine
whether or not the second party involved in the incident was a BHS student.
We are also waiting to confirm whether the second subject was arrested or
detained.

Student safety is always at the top of our agenda and I should point out
that the addition of Campus Monitors this year has given us expanded
observation capabilities on our perimeter; that addition to our campus
safety package proved quite useful this afternoon.

We are most pleased to report that no one was injured and that our staff
and students were alert and behaved very responsibly during the incident.
Many thanks go out to the BPD Officers; their alertness and response time
resulted in a quick, safe resolution to the incident.
