*New to the bulletin today

 

ADMINISTRATION

 

*1. There is no school on Thursday and Friday, November 10 and 11 (staff
development day and Veteran's Day Holiday). There is no school on Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, November 23, 24, and 25 (Thanksgiving break).

 

*2. Annual BHS Jazz T Shirt Contest!!  Become a famous graphic artist and be
the envy of all your friends!  Create the artwork and design for this year's
BHS Jazz T-shirt.  Pick up an entry flyer with instructions from Ms. Cline
in the band room starting today.  Artwork entries are due in the Band Room
A201 by Wednesday, November 2, at the end of school.  Voting by all BHS Jazz
students will take place the following day, Good luck!

 

3. Remember to get your student ID if you don't already have one.  Stop by
the counseling office and ask Robert Stiles to make you an ID during lunch
or after school.  Berkeley High is using student IDs more this year.  For
example, you'll need one to get into rally day, which is this Friday.

 

4. Yearbooks on sale for $65 until October 31st. Yearbooks will go up to $80
after Nov. 5th.

 

5. PE Waivers are now ready.  Beginning today, your 2nd period teachers will
distribute a copy of the waiver.  Make sure they are signed and returned to
the attendance office by 1/20/2012.

 

6. This is a reminder that we are administering the CAHSEE Nov. 1 and Nov. 2
to all Juniors and Seniors who have yet to pass the exam.  Please make sure
to check in with your counselors to confirm whether or not you need to take
any portion of the exam.

1. Seniors whose application deadlines are earlier than Nov.1 or Nov.15
should see their guidance counselor who is writing their recommendation.

RALLY - 1 day until the BHS rally!!!!

 

Through October 28th, if you are suspended, you will not be able to
participate in the BHS rally. 

 

 

CLUBS

 

1. Earphone English Club on Friday at lunch in C124.  We will be reading The
Catching Fire.

 

2. Do you like acting?  We don't care!  Independent Theater Projects is
looking for students interested in auditions for our student produced
performance.  No experience necessary!  Sign up at Mr. Conn's room C232. 

 

*3. Wanna show off your school spirit and help support the starving kids in
Somalia?  Come to the Giving Back Club's first Bakesale on Rally day in the
C-Building in the C-gallery at lunch!

 

*4. Tired of giving money to charities and having no idea whether your
contribution helped?  Then join KIVA Club!  KIVA not only stays in touch
with the people it helps, but makes loans instead of donations.meaning that
you eventually get the money back that you gave.  It's an excellent way to
show support for people and small businesses in developing countries and it
looks great on college apps.  KIVA meets in C232 every Tuesday at lunch.

EVENTS/PERFORMANCES

 

1. Actors, Singers, Dancers: Please come to an information meeting on the
spring musical, "Hairspray".  Go to A203 at lunch Thurs., October 27th.  The
director, Mr. Vaughn will provide information and cookies!

 

2. Auditions for YMTC's production of  RAGTIME will be held November 1, 2 &
3rd at the Walden School, Berkeley.  Ragtime features a large cast for
singers who act and actors who sing. There are many leading and secondary
roles for African Americans.  Rehearsals start the week of Dec 5th. Two week
winter break, and then first week of January.  6 performances, February
10th- 18th at the Julia Morgan Theater. Tuition assistance is available. To

SPORTS


1. Athletic Packet Clearing Night for Winter Sports on November 3 @
5:30-7:00 PM: Turn in your Athletic Packet on Thursday, November 3 between
5:30- 7:00 PM.  Location: To Be Announced.  Meet the head coaches of men's
and women's basketball, soccer, and wrestling.  If you competed on a fall
team, you only need two new emergency forms.  Athletic Packets and Medical
Examination Forms can be found in the Athletic Office or on-line at
www.berkeleyhighathletics.org.

 

2. Boys Soccer Try Outs start on Nov. 7.  Please register for tryouts at
www.futbolberkeley.com. Remember to bring your Athletic Packet to Clearing
Night on Nov. 3 at 5:30 pm in Donahue Gym.

 

3. The Yellowjackets Basketball, Soccer and Wrestling Team Tryouts start
Monday, November 7.  Get ready for try outs by completing a medical
examination and athletic packet.  Athletic packets are available in the
Athletic Director's Office or on-line at www.berkeleyhighathletics.org  Not
sure when you had your last physical exam?  Check the List of Physicals in
the window of the Athletic Training Room. If you competed on a fall sports
team, you only need to complete the emergency forms (one for the AD Office
and one for the coach).

and Boys Basketball programs will be selling "Swag" Student Spirit t-shirts
every Wednesday after school, 3:30-4:30 pm, in front of the Donahue gym. All
BHS students who purchase the student designed "Swag" t-shirt will be
eligible to become a member of the "2012 Swag 6th Man Club" and receive up
to 50% off the student admission price to home basketball games. T-shirts
are $10. STUDENTS MUST PRESENT A CURRENT, VALID BHS STUDENT ID TO PURCHASE A
T-SHIRT AND GAME TICKETS. Support your BHS Basketball programs and join the

JOBS

 

The City of Berkeley's YouthWorks Employment Program in the Department of
Housing & Community Services, will accept applications through November 4th
for the Winter/After school program. Qualified Youth (14-25 years old &
Berkeley residents) are eligible to apply for jobs in a variety of sectors,
including the Berkeley Public Library, childcare, recreation & clerical
positions within city departments and various community organizations. The
pay is $8.00/hr, and Youth may work up to 3 hours/day (15 hrs/week) for a
period of 8-10 weeks. The tentative employment start date is mid-December.
To apply: Youth need to come in person to the YouthWorks office at 2180
Milvia St. (City Hall) to sign in and pick up an application packet. The
completed application must be turned in by applicant, with required
documents including Photo ID, Social Security Card, Proof of Residence, a
typed or word-processed resume, progress report showing a GPA of 2.0 or
higher, and Parental Authorization for youth under the age of 18.

 

The deadline for returning the application & required documents is November
4th, 2011. Please note the following office closures during the application
period: Monday, October 10th, Friday, October 14th & Friday, October 28th.

VOLUNTEERING

 

1. The Berkeley Recreation Department will be hosting a Carnival for kids
K-8th grades.  There will be prizes and goodie bags for all participants.
Anyone from the BHS staff and students interested in volunteering should
contact Eugene Evans at 510-981-6690 (at Live Oak Park).  The event is
October 30th at King Middle School.  It starts at 8:30 am on the track for
set-up.  For more information you can contact 510-478-4817.

 

*2. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Berkeley Holiday Fund, a small Berkeley based
charity, is seeking volunteers for 4 hours work on Tuesday November 1 or
Wednesday, November 2  during the hours of 1 - 6 p.m. Location is near
Solano and The Alameda. Work is stuffing envelopes for a holiday fundraiser.

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp is now taking applications for GRASP! Girls Rock
After School Program (GRASP)

Who: High School aged girls, all musical experience levels welcome

GRASP OVERVIEW:  Students choose which instrument they want to learn:
guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or vocals. They meet once a week for 10
weeks to learn their instrument and collaborate with their band on writing
an original song. There are also workshops such as self-defense,
screenprinting, music herstory, and more! All bands perform their songs at a
showcase finale for family, friends and the general public. To apply for
