*         The College and Career Center would like to welcome Yesenia
Marquez who, along with Angela Price, will assist students with their
college and career options.

*         Unfortunately, there are no individual counseling appointments
available for Seniors until there is someone to manage the desk in the CCC.

*         The Senior College Application Handbook has been updated and is
available online at
http://www.bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=college-application-handbook. The
Junior and Sophomore College Application Handbooks are in the process of
being updated but you can consult the same link for last year's handbooks,
which contain very useful information. 

 

1. FOR SENIORS

 

*SENIOR PARENT COLLEGE NIGHT - Wednesday, October 5, 6:30 pm, BHS library.

This is a great opportunity to get information directly from representatives
of the UCs, Cal States, community colleges and private schools. This event
is for parents of Berkeley High Seniors only (students are not invited to
this meeting).

 

College Essay Readers Available: College essay readers are available in the
College/Career Center (D221) during lunchtime for BHS Seniors to meet with
on a drop-in basis.

 

*College Visits

Over 100 college representatives visit Berkeley High's College/Career Center
every year.  Seniors may attend up to 10 of those meetings, with the
permission of the teacher whose class they are missing.  The current
September college visit list and permission slips are available at the front
desk of the administration building and online at
http://www.bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=finding-a-college .  Senior
English teachers also have copies of the College Visit list and permission
slips.

2. FOR JUNIORS/SENIORS

 

SAT/ACT Test Dates - The next SAT test is November 5 (the registration has
passed for the October 1 SAT).  Registration deadline is October 7.  Go to
http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/sat-dates to register.  The October 22
ACT is taking late registration until September 30 (with extra fee).  The
next ACT is on December 10, 2011, with a registration date of November 4.
Go to http://www.actstudent.org/ to register.  Fee waivers for low income
students are available in D221.

 

*College Information Sessions in the Bay Area

*         Introduction to Columbia, Wed. Oct. 12 7:30 pm at Berkeley High
School. http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/events/intro.php 

*         Performing and Visual Arts College Fair - Sunday, October 23, 12
p.m. - 2:30 p.m., Nob Hill Masonic Center, San Francisco, CA. This is an
excellent opportunity to find out about schools from across the country that
offers excellent programs in the arts. 

*         UCLA's SCHOOL OF THEATER, FILM AND TELEVISION INFORMATION
SESSIONS: October 15, 2011 - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Hyatt Summerfield Suites
Emeryville, 5800 Shellmound Street, Emeryville, CA. Learn about the programs
offered in the Theater and Film Departments at UCLA.  Presentation includes
information about our two departments, the application process, the
portfolio/audition/interview requirements, housing, student life, summer
programs, and financial aid/scholarships. This is a FREE event open to
prospective students, parents, educators and counselors, but you must RSVP
to reserve a seat (space is limited).Online RSVP is available at

3. FOR SOPHOMORES/JUNIORS

 

PSAT:  Berkeley High School is offering the PSAT on Saturday, October 15.
Sign ups will take place at the Donahue Gym ticket windows during lunch and
after school until 4 p.m.  Juniors register between September 26 and
September 30, and sophomores register between October 3 and October 7.  The
cost is $22 payable in cash or check or money order payable to Berkeley High
School.  All tenth and eleventh graders are encouraged to take the PSAT.
Juniors who score well may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship
Program.  As a practice for the SAT, students get back their test booklet
and a printout of their answers and the correct answers and feedback about
critical academic skills.
