Tardies
A student is tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the bell rings, unless they enter with a pass. Tardies cannot be excused. Three tardies equal one unexcused absence.
Absences
A student is absent if he/she is not in the classroom after 30 minutes of the period has passed, unless the student enters with a pass. It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to ensure that their children attend school regularly.
Absences must be excused within 5 days of returning to school. In each case provide the following: your child’s full name, grade, your name and relationship to the student, your home phone number (and work number if applicable), days or periods of absence, and the reason for your student’s absence.
How to Excuse Absences
To excuse absences please:
● Bring a note to the Attendance Office – D 134. Students may not excuse absences during class. Parents/Guardians may come between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
● Call the Attendance Office at 644-6209 and leave a detailed message. Students may not use this option – only a parent or guardian may call.
● Email AttendanceOffice at berkeley.net (Online form will be coming soon)
Class participation is an integral part of students' learning experiences, parents/guardians and students are encouraged to schedule medical appointments during non-school hours.
Absences are excused for: health reasons, medical appointments, or death in the immediate family. Attending funeral service cannot exceed more than three days if out of state or one day if local.
For planned absences that are five days or more, fill out a Notice of Planned Absence form (which can be obtained in the Attendance Office or Counseling Office) get all appropriate signatures and turn it in to the Attendance Office before the absence.
Unexcused absences
An unexcused absence occurs when a student is absent and does not get a clearance slip from the Attendance Office (within 5 days of returning to school). Three tardies equal one unexcused absence.
Grade Reduction Policy
If a student accumulates five unexcused absences during one report card period (9 weeks), his/her grade can be lowered by one full grade (e.g., from an A to a B). If a student accumulates ten unexcused absences during one report period, his/her grade can be lowered by an additional grade (using the first example: from a B to a C). The student starts fresh each semester. Please note: the lowest grade that a student may receive because of attendance is a C.
Appeals
A student or parent/guardian may appeal a grade reduction by written letter to a Vice Principal within 30 days of the written appeal. The Vice Principal shall convene a committee, comprised of the Vice Principal and two Berkeley High School classroom teachers. The committee shall sustain or deny the appeal, and its decision is final.
This is an abridged version of School Board and California Education Code Policies.
