All incoming 9th grade students have been placed in 9th grade math. This is
a holding position. In order to determine a student's actual Math
placement, they must take a math placement test and we are asking their
current math teachers to make a teacher recommendation.
1. On Tuesday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 20 Berkeley High will be
offering the Math Placement test. The test will be held at Longfellow, King
and Willard. For New-to-BUSD students, who are on Spring Break that week or
are experiencing other conflicts, there will be two makeup tests on Monday,
April 11 and Tuesday, April 12. Please note, the makeup test will be held
the week before the regular test and it will be held in the Berkeley High
Library-a change of venue.
2. Current BUSD students will take the regular math placement test during
their regular math class. If they want to try for honors they will also
need to take the Honors test which is offered afterschool. Their teachers
should be able to tell them in which classroom the test will be offered.
April 19 the test will be given at Longfellow; April 20 the test will be
given at King and Willard.
3. New-to-BUSD students. We expect most New-to-BUSD students will report to
either Longfellow School at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 or King or Willard
at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20. The Front Office at the middle schools
will direct you to the test location. If you cannot make either of those
days, please report to the Berkeley High School library at 3:45 on Monday,
April 11 or Tuesday, April 12 where a makeup test will be offered. Where
ever you take the test, it is not necessary to sign up ahead of time, just
come, pencil in hand. All students will first take the regular math
placement tests. Students interested in taking an Honors math class will
stay for a second test.
4. Teacher recommendation . Current BHS 8th grade math teachers will make
placement recommendations through the BUSD. For New-to-BUSD Berkeley High
School is planning on creating a short online questionnaire for current
math teachers of 8th grade students asking for math placement
recommendations. The online survey will be up by the end of April if not
before. We will announce the address as soon as it is available both by
posting on our etree and contacting a list we have of Independent Schools.
