SAT word of the day: acquiescence (noun) - passive, content

ADMINISTRATION

*1. Come to an informational meeting about next years AP Biology class.
Learn about what the class is like from current AP Biology students!  Come
to room G301 today (Thurs or Fri) at lunch.

*2. Any student interested in Taking AP Chemistry next year can get
information Thursday and Friday this week in G304 at lunch.

*3. Biotech Academy is still looking for interested students for the 2011
-2012 school year.  Come to G304 or G305 anytime to get info and an
application.

4. Learn how the universe works!  Learn PHYSICS!  IF you  would like to AP
Physics next year, you must attend a required informational meeting.
Meetings will take place Thursday and Friday during lunch in room G217.
Meeting starts at 11:45 am.  Don't miss out!  Come hear about these
AWESOME and CHALLENGING classes!

5. Take a SAT or ACT Full Length practice test:  $15 SAT or ACT Full
length Practice Test, Saturday, March 26, 2011 9:00 am - 1:15pm.  Payment
due to Berkeley High by March 24, 2011. Seating is limited, so sign up in
the College Career Center at lunch or afterschool.

6. Student elections are here!  Want to be the next president, chief of
social activities commissioner of multicultural affairs, lead artist,
resident DJ, school site council rep or any of 133, yes 133 jobs
available?  Come to the leadership office for more info or to pick up an
application. Student leadership needs you!!  Apply today!

YEARBOOK

1.  Seniors and clubs come get your page.  One week left before it is too
late. H102B - 7th period.

SPORTS

1. Girls Basketball State Championship game tickets will be on sale at the
Athletic Office everyday this week at lunchtime and from 3:30 to 4:00 pm.
$10 for students, $16 for adults. Come to Sacramento and root your Jackets
to the title!

*2. Mikia Franklin and Mikkala McGill both received United Spirit
Association All-American Awards, and will represent Berkeley High School
this weekend at the USA National Cheerleading Competition in Anaheim.
Please wish them well!

*3. The City of Berkeley has declared Tuesday, March 29, 2011 as BHS Girls
Basketball Team Day.  Please join Mayor Tom Bates and the City Council on
March 29 at 7:00 PM at City Hall.  Mayor Bates will present the Lady
Jackets with a proclamation to honor their achievements.  Come to the
second floor of City Hall at 2134 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (x- Allston
way) to support the girls' basketball team.

CLUBS

1. California Young Reader Medal voting time is here!  Everyone who has
read The Hunger Games, Unwind and The Adoration of Jenna Fox is entitled
to cast your ballot for your favorite title.  Help the author of the book
you like best win!  See Ms. Provence or Ms. Goldstein -Erickson in the
library for your secret ballot.  You must vote by March 30.

2. Chess Club will be cancelled this Thursday. We'll see you next week as
usual.

SENIORS

*1.  Senior Prom tickets are on sale on the Senior steps at lunch and
afterschool.  Tickets will be $75 until April 22nd!  The theme of Senior
Prom is "Oasis Nights" at the SF Galleria on May 14th.  Make sure you get
your ticket as soon as possible.

2.  Check in or sign up for 2011 Chicano/Latino Graduation come to Mr.
Melgoza's office in D155 (the Main office).

3. Yearbook Announcement: Seniors come and get your seniors pages.
Deadline is March 28 for finished pages.  Yearbooks prices go up to $80 on
March 31.  Yearbooks are $75 or $65 with free and reduced lunch.  Buy them

JUNIORS

1. Hey Juniors, "Bright lights, big cities" is the junior prom theme.
Tickets can be purchased for $50 in the leadership office.  The prom will
be from 8pm until Midnight on April 16th at the Golden Gate Fields - Turf
Club in Albany.

JOBS

The City of Berkeley's YouthWorks Employment Program in the Department of
Housing & Community Services, is pleased to announce that the official
application period for the Summer Youth Employment Program is Feb 28
through April 1st.  Qualified Youth (14-25 years old & Berkeley residents)
are eligible to apply for jobs in a variety of sectors, including
childcare, recreation & clerical positions within city departments and
various community organizations.  The pay is $8.00/hr, and Youth may work
up to 30 hrs/week for a period of 6-8 weeks.  The tentative employment
start date is late June/early July.  

To apply: Youth need to come in person to the YouthWorks office at 2180
Milvia St. (City Hall), to sign in and pick up an application packet.  The
completed application must be turned in with required documents including
Photo ID, Social Security Card, Proof of Residence, a typed or
word-processed resume, and Parental Authorization for youth under the age
of 18.   The deadline for returning the application & required documents
is April 1st, 2011. Please note the offices will be closed on March 11th
and 25th as a cost-cutting measure.  For further information, contact

EVENTS

1. IB ART Exhibit on Thursday, March 24th in the Community Theater from 6
to 8:30 pm.  Refreshments will be provided.  Come and see amazing student
artwork. This is going to be a great show!  Hundreds of artworks, 3 HUGE
galleries, 35 solo exhibitions, tasty food and drinks, and time to talk
with brilliant young folks about art and ideas!  This will be an art party
to remember!  

2.  The Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble (and combos) will play at
Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland (Jack London Square) on Monday evening, March
28, 2011.  Tickets are $15 (8:00 p.m. show) and $10 (10:00 p.m. show).
Proceeds benefit BHS Jazz.  Tickets may be purchased directly from Yoshi's
box office (510-238-9200), or in the BHS Bandroom (A-201).  Come enjoy the
evening, support BHS Jazz, and see our talented musicians perform in this
outstanding venue.  See you there!!   

SUMMER

*1. Camp Venture is a five-day training and motivational camp for high
school students who have finished their junior year and are interested in
pursuing a career in business, particularly as entrepreneurs. It is held
from June 26 thru June 30, 2011 at the Maritime Academy California State
University in Vallejo. Students, sponsored by their local Rotary Clubs,
have the opportunity to interact with experienced business people and meet
with other East Bay students who have similar interests.
